Re: Bed, Bath & Beyond Announces Vendor Consignment Plan

I've read that when you go into a Costco to shop just about everything there is on consignment from the vendor.

Not sure how common a practice this is, but maybe QVC does a version of this, too.

I would certainly miss not having BB&B as a shopping option.  I was just there yesterday picking up a CO2 bottle for my Soda Strean. They did not have available but ordered and shipped to me at a very good price.  Looking around it was very depressing and sad to see the many wall shelves covered with curtains - they were empty.  I have always appreciated comparing items there, looking and touching items.  Shopping has changed so much.  I hope they are able to restructure and continue to operate.

I have never heard of this type of consignment arrangement before. BB& B has had one foot on a banana peel for several years now. DD shops there online all the time. The two that were near me closed about five years ago, maybe longer. I still am bombarded with coupons from them in the mail. I give them to DD. I hope they can make a turnaround to solvency but it sounds like investing in this consignment plan they are about to throw in the towel. They have a huge store on a main highway in my area...I went in there a few months ago looking for a comforter I saw on the website but wanted to see in person....half the store had empty shelves. I can remember when it was always jammed with shoppers and merchandise stacked high.

It sounds like a brilliant move to me.  It's a win-win for both companies if BB&B can sell stuff.  We're losing so many retailers so quickly, I hope it works.  If for no other reason, than to save jobs.

Re: Bed, Bath & Beyond Announces Vendor Consignment Plan

they shot themselves in the foot, when they tried to put in their own brand for tried and true brands. I love/loved my bbb and it's sad to see it now.

The people are still nice and seem hopeful. I agree too many things are sold out, etc. maybe the new strategy will right this sinking ship. It's giving me another reason to shop amazon.

Re: Bed, Bath & Beyond Announces Vendor Consignment Plan

I worked for BBB in the Northeast and California (in MMGT) for about seven years in the '90s. It was always a very quirky company and not in a good way. After the founders (Lenny and Warren) cashed out, it got even worse. Then after I left, there was the class-action lawsuit for misclassifying managers as not exempt when they should have been exempt (denying them OT). They settled. There were plenty of personnel issues that were not visible to the client.

However, from a customer perspective, they had and lost a lot of fans. They really were one of the first category killers. The "professional management" they brought later in really screwed the pooch. There was an interview recently-ish in the WSJ about what they think went wrong.

I feel bad for all the associates and managers who lost their jobs.
