My daughter came down with a strong allergy reaction to anything in the onion family a few years ago, almost overnight. She carries an EPI pen now and is really good about avoiding onions. She's learned to cook well and will use spices and herbs to compensate for not being able to use onions as flavoring in various dishes.
When we're all out to dinner together, most restaurants are very good about dealing with food restrictions.

When I was around 18/19, I developed allergies to all raw/uncooked fruits and veggies.
It happened over a few weeks. Depending on what I ate, my symptoms could be....swollen lips, throat closing, itchy throat and inside my ears, hives, respiratory issues and welts....or all of the above.
I was tested at 18/19 and again in the last few years......no changes.......still allergic.
There is an enzyme in the raw foods, when cooked, either changes or disappears. Once cooked to a certain point, I can eat that food with no issues.
During the summer, I grill peaches, plums, nectarines, veggies etc.
During the fall/winter, I cook apples, pears, bananas, etc. I like to roast veggies.
When I was tested both times....chicken, eggs, wheat, chocolate, shell fish, and many of the commonly allergic foods, showed NO reaction at all.
Yes, I am odd.

I used to be allergic to eggs (bad hives!) but I outgrew it and can eat eggs. However I limit them and I do not get the flu shot in case.
About becoming allergic later. My husband (after taking them many times before) took a gel cap Ibuprofen for a headache at work the other year and could not breathe! He was rushed to emergency via ambulance from work and almost died. He was hospitalized for 2 days. Thankfully where he works they have a full medical team and they helped him and gave him oxygen until the ambulance arrived or he would have been dead. It came out that he is not to take IB anymore due to an allergy. (He is also asthmatic so that didn't help when this all happened).
And yes he was told anyone at any time can develop an allergy in their life, even after eating those same foods or taking those same medicines before with no problems.

I am not sure if it's an allergy or her body reacting to the caffeine . She tried drinking it after eating and same thing. I have told her to experiment with decaf. I am not a coffee drinker so can't comment on the effects of coffee. I am allergic to chocolate and have been all of my life.
Not a coffee drinker either. However, has anyone remotely thought of what the coffee really is combined with? It's not pure coffee unless you buy just the beans and even then, what was the plant feed and sprayed with? I have a feeling from the behavior of others who do drink coffee that it's tampered with and not in a very beneficial way.

This seems to be happening more and more frequently.
A few years ago I ate a little piece of watermelon that was on my plate as a garnish. Within a minute my lips were beet red and had swelled up so that I looked like I had a botched lip job. I tried organic and different varies and each time the TINIEST piece causes my lips and tongue to swell. After working with my allergist, I was told never again --the reaction will only get worse and happen faster. They are concerned that next my throat will swell closed!
Why at the age of 40 am I suddenly allergic to watermelon?
I did learn that the "shrimp allergy" phenomenon that many people are newly suffering is actually a reaction people are having to not the shrimp, but the chemicals and contaminants that FARM RAISED imported shrimp are raised in!
I know now many people who were 'allergic' to shrimp can eat wild shrimp with no problems or reaction. We only eat wild seafood and never out in restaurants.
Food for thought.

Thank you for that information! How can we tell if the seafood (particularly shrimp) is wild and not farm raised?

When my son was born I could no longer eat pork. I get violently ill if I do.
Now I have to also include green peppers and artichokes.
Not sure if getting so ill is an actual allergy, but these foods are on the no eat zone for me.
I really miss the artichokes. That was one of my favorite foods.

You're correct. According to my daughter's specialists, it doesn't come under the heading of a reall allergy, it's called a food "sensitivity."
Functionally, it can cause harm in the same way. Before we knew what was going on, her throat closed up a couple of times. Enough to cause a quick trip to the ER.
The problem with onions is you can't tell if they're in foods you eat a lot of the time, which is scary. We went to a Farmer's Market together a couple of years ago and she tried something home made. She asked the guy if there were any onions in it, told him it was a serious allergy. He assured her there were none, he made it himself. Within minutes, she had the reaction of her throat swelling.
I confronted him, he admitted he lied because he had been sure it wouldn't hurt her.

In a resturant it is 99.9% farm raised unless you are at an upscale resturant and they specify wild.
In the grocery store, your first tip will be the price. Wild shrimp is about twice a much as farmed raised. Then read the package the label will clearly say WILD.
A friend of mine who is a MD has also had this problem develop in the last year or so. Any farm raised shrimp and he immediately breaks out in giant welts all over and get VERY red and short of breathe. Yet he eats wild shrimp with no reactions. !!!! I asked my allergiest about it and he agree with my friend and noted this is not that uncommon ![]()

I would have punched him in the throat and told him "I am sure that wouldn't hurt you."
