Re: Beauty salon stroke syndrome

my salon is Aveda and their shampoo sink is attached to a long recliner like a chaise longe. it is comfortable and relaxing. my neck doesn't bend or hyperextend. if im having a toner or something like a deep conditioner i have to hang out in there for a bit.

the uncomfortable shampoo sinks are the ones that attach to chair that reclines. that would put your head at an odd angle.

Strokes are caused my many things.  My 23 year old SIL had a stroke 3 months after she got married.  The cause.... Birth control pills combined with smoking.  She was in rehab for 3 months and there were a couple of very young women in there with her... All smokers who took BC pills.

That being said, you should not be uncomfortable at the shampoo bowl.  Have your stylist line the neck indentation with a towel.  If you are too short and there is no booster chair, sit on a pile of towels or books to raise yourself up. You can even stand up and lean over the bowl.

This problem is rare and not likely to happen, so relax and get comfortable.

@Carmie

During my 72 Cardiac Rehabilitation Sessions, I met 5 young adults that suffered heart attacks. One 26 year old young woman had suffered 2, as had I, heart attacks in her young life. Her issue, according to her,was pretty much genetics.

I also met one young man that was 28 years old, and a Minor League Pro Baseball player. He had undergone a Stent Angioplasty. He was fortunate that the team doctor ordered a Maximal Treadmill Stress Test, and also an Echocardiogram.

From there came the Heart Cath Procedure and subsequent Angioplasty. He had 2 main arteries over 90% blocked, but suffered zero heart damage. He told me his doctors pointed to, more than likely, from genetic causes. A young man does not play Professional Baseball without being pretty physically fit.

For many both young and old, lifestyle can be a factor. For many, including myself, genetics plays/played a significant role in my 2 heart attacks, and also it appears be the same with the 2 young adults I mentioned above.

Wow John, I am so sorry to hear of your health problems.  We never know when illness can pop up in our lives.  All we can do is take care,of ourselves and hope for the best.

i pray that someday, medicine will be able to prevent heart problems before they happen.  I wish you good health and a long happy life.

My place doesn't have any fancy chairs.  They do have, though, little footstools that I never knew about.   What a difference it makes just to put your feet up a few inches.  Maybe other salons have them available.

Re: Beauty salon stroke syndrome

My mom had this happen a few years ago.  She is 90 now, so she might have been 88 or so.  She had a mini stroke after getting her hair washed.  The beautician helped her from falling to the floor.  She went to the hospital, after her husband gave her three real asprin.  A stroke was confirmed.  The three asprin saved her from having serious damage.  She still gets her hair done, but she stands and leans over the sink.  REMEMBER ASPRIN IMMEDIATELY IF YOU THINK IT MAY BE A STROKE.

Re: Beauty salon stroke syndrome

I have looked all over my end of the world and all of the salons have chairs where you lean your head back into the sink.  It is very uncomfortable.  So i go to the appt with a freshly washed head and then she cuts it.  If i have color i wash it out at home in the shower.  No more of this bending of my neck.

Re: Beauty salon stroke syndrome

The chair I sit in for my washing after my color is ok but the bowl is horrble for my neck and hurts all the time I am in it but the woman is not going to buy new sinks they were for italy or someplace........but my stylist usually puts cloths down so I am in not as much pain.  UGH always something to worry about.
