Being from Chicago back when life was civil....I loved going to Barnes & Noble.

They had a coffee shop and you could browse books and meet friends and see

All the news books. It was a day in itself. And how I love the smell of books!!!

We are five minutes from one with a nice area for coffee. We usually go every week or two as we both are voracious readers and buy a lot of books. In fact when the kids were growing up, we often went and had lunch in the Paramus store. Kind of a tradition for us.💕

They are all flourishing near us. I used to have a membership, until my friend took over a small independent bookstore and expanded it. I get most of my books from her.

My mom had a membership at Brentano's in D.C. when she was young. Borders bought them and gave her a lifetime membership for some reason. I don't think she ever worked for them. She worked at the Pentagon. When my mom died, I called to tell them, and they transferred the lifetime membership on her little green card to me! I still have the card with "LTM" in the corner. That was something I didn't expect.

Of course Borders closed. Smiley Sad

@beach-mom,

I forgot about Brentanos.

I loved Borders too. Such a great store with wonderful cds, so many and a Borders Christmas cd that came out every year. Remember that? I got some bookmarks with a little gold reindeer on one end. They are on my Christmas tree nowSmiley Happy

I have always loved book stores but sadly many have closed over the years.  I am glad Barnes and Noble is an option for those of us who love books and reading.  They also have many gift items and it is fun to walk through the store and see what is new.  Reading a good book for me is uplifting, an escape from the world around me and relaxing.

Re: Barnes Noble visit

[ Edited ]

I love Barnes and Nobles. Yesterday we were at the new one. It is smaller than the one that went out several years ago and they don't have a coffee bar but it's still full of great items. I picked out 3 new books yesterday. DH gave me a B&N gift card for Christmas and I'm in my height  of glory! Even though this one is smaller it still has a wide selection of books and other neat items.

We don't have a Barnes & Noble store in my town but we do have three very nice independent bookstores that I frequent as often as possible. There was a time that we did not have any at all, the small bookstore that was open in my childhood closed due to death of the owner. It's an unsettling feeling for me not to have a bookstore in town. I do most of my purchases from Amazon because of their prices but I still try to go to the local store every other month. The store I frequent has a discount when so many books are purchased. I could easily spend an entire rainy day in a book shop.

That's awesome!  Yes, I have been sad that so many book chains and stores have close up over the years.  I recently went to Books-a-Million and it is a wonderful store.  It has something, I feel, for everyone.  I always head to the back of the store for the bargain racks.  I wanted so many books but I restrained myself and only got 4!

Back home  Borders had live music on Friday nights. A single person with a guitar;  once in a bit the performer would have another singer.

Just different performers each week.🎶
