Bank of America acct - hacked again!!!!

About 2 months ago my sons BOA account was hacked for over $300 in purchases in a foreign country. He just called me as I've been traveling and using my card a lot to check my account his card was compromised again! This time someone buying membership on Match.com and Netflix. BOA is in my opinion not the "friendliest" bank when it happened to me about 6 months ago it was a very frustrating experience. Just wanted to pass along in case anyone uses BOA to check their account. So far mine is OK but my cousin just told me she had hers compromised last month from FB purchase and a Internet gambling site on a BOA card.

Re: Bank of America acct - hacked again!!!!

My credit card was used fraudulently beginning on 12/26 with charges to Match.com. I do not have a Bank of America account. It was a credit card I rarely use. I only use it on ITunes, which makes me think their website has been hacked. I wasn't sure whether or not to post this information, but anyone with an ITunes account might want to check their credit card transactions.

I think he uses iTunes. Because I know he doesn't use Match.com! Thank you for the info!

Re: Bank of America acct - hacked again!!!!

Yikes, scary! I just checked my BofA account to make sure. So far, so good. I keep a fair amount of money in there so that could be devastating.

I've had two hack attempts last month - both through retailers. Fortunately, the first retailer caught it and cancelled it, and the second one I caught and cancelled so neither order ended up going through (one would have been a credit card and the other my Paypal account).

I just hate that none of the banks or retailers will pursue these thiefs. They just make it that much easier for them.

I'd be super safe about the bank account - don't use it on your phone (I can't believe how many people actually do that sort of thing through their phone!). Don't store the information on any retail sites. Don't be sloppy when you pull your debit card out at the store. The bad guys are always one step ahead of the good guys.

Re: Bank of America acct - hacked again!!!!

BofA called us to tell us one of our vendors had been charging us and shut our account down. They sent a new card overnight and they were really nice. What was odd? We couldn't get the card to work to pump gas, then the phone rang and it was BofA telling us why.

Are you using a debit card? If so, you're leaving yourself wide open to problems. I don't have or use debit cards and will not. They do not offer the consumer protections that credit cards offer, and if a debit card is hacked, money is pulled directly out of your bank account. DANGER, Will Robinson! DANGER!

I'm so sorry. How frustrating for you. And inconvenient. My bank has a Spending Card - Debit card -- not connected to my account. Basically I add money to the spending account. I use this pre-paid debit card when I travel, at gas stations, online, etc. My bank suggested this after my account got hacked while traveling last year.

I have a bank debit card tied to my account, but only use at the same grocery store and withdraw ATM money only at my bank's machine.

Good luck to you -- and have a better week

Debit cards are treated the same as a visa fraud. Fortunately I didn't have any problems but my friends daughter was hacked by FB for credits for a game with info taken by them! It's scary but I'm traveling out of the country for 3 weeks and taking my Viisa card I am going to contact Chase so they don't stop my purchases ( I just learned to do that as I usually don't spend but this time I'm buying jewelry)

Re: Bank of America acct - hacked again!!!!

B of A has caught people trying "trial" charges on my account about 3 times. They try charging just a couple of dollars. I've been very pleased with the way they detected the charges and shut down the account. Unfortunately, one time I was traveling and it created quite an inconvenience but that wasn't the bank's fault. It was a debit card and they immediately replaced the money. They treat debit cards just like credit cards.

I absolutely agree! I had a loan with them a few years ago, and they were awful. They would call to "remind" me that payments were due even though my record of paying on time was perfect. The "reminder" was always followed by threats of interest being added at the end, "and you're going to end up owing us a lot of money". Really nasty people, harrassing me for no reason at all. I had the loan for a few years, and finally just paid the whole thing off because I was tired of the threats.

The day that loan was paid off was a happy day! I will never, ever have any dealings with BOA again.
