I was almost in an accident because of balloons.
A big bunch of partially deflated balloons attached to a weight blew into traffic, partially dragging by the weight. It flew right in front of my car and it caused the driver in the opposite direction to swerve and the driver behind me who was following too close had to swerve up onto the sidewalk to avoid rear ending me. Swear I almost had a heart attack right there.
In the split second that it came out into the road I thought it was a baby stroller and that I was going to kill the baby. It took a couple seconds to register it was a balloon bouquet. I would like to find the people who left that out on their party bench.

@occasionalrain I absolutely agree, and I have always felt that there should be a law against this. Churches and schools, especially, should not permit this, and it would be so easy for them and other facilities to discourage this practice and encourage the good ways to honor someone.

@Drlinda Yes, you are right. This is cruel.
OMG are you Kidding me??? They are released by their owner that has Trained them and fly Back Home!
Monke~
We're talking doves, not homing pigeons.
We have eagles and hawks in my area and the poor doves are at the top of their list as preferred food.
It breaks my heart every time I see it happen.

@Preds I was going to mention the lanters, too, but you beat me to it. I happened upon a crazy deal several years ago and bought a bunch of them in case we ever had an opportunity to use them. At the time, I was so impressed by the deal I was getting I never even stopped to think about the area we live in, where we'd launch them, etc. Dumb move on my part. One of our kids insisted that I don't use them (lots of big old oak trees in our neighborhood) but if we did we should do it over water. Today the whole lot of them is still put away, never tried even one. Time to pitch them.

Better to plant a tree, put a bench in a park, make a donation, give blood, volunteer.
On this we agree.

Balloon releases, along with so many other overly faux sentimental instances of claptrap are nothing short of idiotic. If one wants to recognize something one views as important or momentous, be it someone's memory or a special event, find a sensible, responsible, adult-like way of doing it.

If we all contacted our representatives, local, state, we could perhaps stop it, or at least know we tried.
