That is terrible on so many levels. I'm in Maryland, and the "come to the Bahamas" ads run a lot this time of year.
Many years ago my husband and I traveled to St. Thomas and thorougly enjoyed our trip. However, what DID bother me was poverty all around.
It was sad and uncomfortable.
We never returned.
@Witchy Woman Same here. We went to a beautiful resort in St. Thomas. We rented a car and drove to the other end of the island to take the ferry to St. John. All along the way you could see the poverty. Even my DS who was only around 12 at the time commented on it.
ETA: this was over 20 years ago.

@Estellee. Not surprising, it sounds like your typical American city. Thugs, scammers and all manner of thieves are taking over everywhere it seems.

@Kachina624 It was great for the cruisers that shopped there for collectibles, liquor and jewelry. My parents went there every year and I even took a few trips with my friend. Good times!

It's safe in mine. Try watching fewer channels and listening to fewer people who use fear to manipulate.
I took her comment to mean that violence and crime happens in small towns as well as big cities. A number of the school shootings have happened in small towns. I also particularly remember the mass shooting at the July 4th parade in Highland Park, Illinois. Your small town is "safe" until something like this happens. Just a fact of life today, no matter where you get your news.

If my memory serves me at least 4 countries have travel advisory concerns for their citizens traveling to the the US. Gun violence, mass shootings being the reason. Japan and Australia are 2 countries that come to mind that issued a warning. So the US needs to clean up its act also.
We are safe in our small town too. Very low crime stats. Even when our small town swells to over 4 times ithe population during the summer months, the police do an excellent job at keeping residents safe.

Yes obviously I'm painfully aware of mass shootings, but these crime threads and posts never have anything to do with mass shootings. Quite the contrary, actually.

I'm addicted to the show "Bahamas Life" but I don't think I'd choose Nassau. I've been there and have had no problems, just a warm welcome (where I live is quite close on the E coast of FL), but I'm no night owl.
I'd choose Exuma, maybe, (swimming pigs!)
if it turns out I can't afford a move all the way up the coast to New England it might be poss. to relocate somewhere over in the Bahamas. It's an island chain, very long: 760 miles, lots of different kinds of communities in the different islands.
Yet I miss trees, which is probably foolish, but there it is. New England or bust, but I am thinking about emergency backup plans as Mass prices are holding--not getting higher, but not getting lower.

it hasn't improved much. Periodically the U.S. has issued warnings about them before. Crime has always been bad in certain islands. Their entire economy is service based and pay is poor. Lots of crime there. As long as you keep away from certain neighborhoods (talking about people in hotel/resorts) you should be OK. When I was in Mexico. I was warned serveral times to never walk alone on the beach at dusk. I never take cruses. I always stay in a hotel at a resort. For a time we hit all the islands. I never liked it. The only island I felt relaxed and safe in was Bermuda.

We have a friend whose daughter just flew to a resort there for her honeymoon. Hope they return safely.

So many of these places that survive solely on tourism seem to become magnets for crime. Tourists are all considered wealthy (even if they aren't) and easy marks for theft, robbery, assault, etc. I guess there is a tendency to let your guard down when you are in a different, beautiful place. Big mistake now.
