The U.S. embassy in the Bahamas has released a travel warning and travel advisory that the island nation is currently unsafe for tourists amidst 18 murders — “primarily” motivated by gang violence — in January alone.
Safety concerns have reached a point of severity where U.S. officials say people shouldn’t even try to “physically resist” being robbed.
“Murders have occurred at all hours including in broad daylight on the streets,” the embassy wrote in a release, also recommending the use of “extreme caution” on the eastern side of the Bahamas’ capital city of Nassau.

@San Antonio Gal This isn't good news for all the cruises heading that way this weekend.

That is horrible and so frightening!

Lisa Robertson just bought a house there.
I've been to the Bahamas many times over the last few decades and 2015 was the last time, horrible vibes and actually scary at times.

It amazes me how dangerous the islands have become. We used to enjoy visits to Sandals for many years, the resorts were beautiful and we got to see many different islands. Most of the ones we have visited in the past are now increasingly dangerous.
We have been to the Bahama's many times and have shopped around town and ate out in restaurants. This is so damaging to their economy, it doesn't make any sense.
Needless to say we stopped going years ago as we had friends robbed in Jamaica. We were all staying at the same resort and they went out into town, while we did not......thankfully.

St Thomas was the place to go before the pandemic. I heard a lot of stores have closed and they don't recommend venturing out at night, that's sad.

With the crime being experienced everywhere now, I'm not sure there are many places that are actually safe to travel. I traveled to Jamaica quite frequently in the 90s. The last time I went, I didn't feel safe and never returned. People think when they're on vacation, they're safe. People think if they stay in a resort, they're safe. I hope people will heed these warnings.

NY Post: Earlier this week, the State Department also put nearby Jamaica on a level three of four “reconsider travel” advisory — the only higher threat being a “do not travel” warning.
“Violent crimes, such as home invasions, armed robberies, sexual assaults, and homicides, are common,” the department warns.
“Sexual assaults occur frequently, including at all-inclusive resorts.”

It is good that their government put out a warning.
I went to Nassau years and years ago (once) but even that long ago, was surprised at how rampant crime seemed.

I went to the Bahama's years ago and have no desire to go back. It was seedy back then.
