I was a single mom that didn't make jack & didn't get very much child support- my son was in parochial school and brought home "a list" so I made sure his school supply shelf (at home) was always stocked.  Whenever I had some extra money I made sure I found paper & pencils on sale.  I tried to be as thrifty for his school supplies as I could & by golly I didn't ask anyone for help nor did I accept anything for free.  and with that I'd best keep it to myself..
