Baby Wallaby Makes Joyous Debut at Australian Zoo (LOL squee!)

Baby Wallaby Makes Debut at Australian Zoo

Ta-da!

Like a rabbit out of a hat, Taronga Zoo's new baby wallaby popped out of her mom's pouch and made her first public debut in Sydney.

It was magical.

According to Australia's The Daily Telegraph, the joey, Mica, stayed hidden in her mom's built-in pocket for five months before deciding to say hello to the world.

"She's still quite shy, but we're starting to see her little face more and more.

Mica likes to find a nice spot to rest in the sun and the joey will often pop its head out to look around," said Taronga zookeeper Tony Britt-Lewis.

Mica is sharing the pouch with another sibling, who is still playing hard to get.

The other baby Brush-tailed Rock wallaby has popped out once or twice but hasn't stayed out long enough for the keepers to take photos or determine the sehx.

"Within the next month they will start to venture out of pouch so we’ll be able to start seeing them a bit more," Taronga's media officer Paul Fahy told The Daily Telegraph

"They're born the size of a jelly bean, and it's around about five or six months that they start to show their face.

It often starts with a little leg hanging out of pouch which is quite unusual to see but it's pretty cute," he continued.

These two furry newcomers are part of the zoo's successful breeding program, which will welcome yet another joey into the spotlight in the upcoming months.

Rock wallabies used to be prevalent throughout south-eastern Australia but are now listed as endangered due to hunting and habitat loss.

@feline groovy

What a happy baby :-)

There are many elements: wind, fire, water
But none quite like the element of surprise

Now can you imagine her happily shouting in a tiny Australian-accented voice,
"G-day world!!"
