One news report I heard was that IRS has stated that they will contact you by MAIL, NOT by phone.

That's true. If there's any kind of problem, they send a certified letter that you have to sign for. I know because I've been there & I can assure you that they never, ever called me on the phone to tell me there were problems with my returns.

I saw that on local news. I can honestly say that I have no sympathy whatsoever for anyone who would fall for such obvious scam. IRS doesn't and never has and never would contact people by phone. Even if you got such a call, who would even speak the person? Wouldn't you just say "so send me a letter" and hang up? I live in muli unit condo and last week, a young man, nicely dresssed in a suit with clip board, knocked on my door and asked to see my electrical bill so he could "ensure" that I was receiving the utility reductions that the "O administration" put into place. Obviously it was a scam of some type or an attempt, I just told him to get the (*&-* away from my door but I'm sure there were people in the building who politely listened to his pitch and invited him and showed him their electricity bills. And if something bad happens.....they deserve it.

There are a lot of elderly people who fall for this type of thing because they are scared. They don't know the IRS would send a letter and not call.

They get a call saying they owe money and all their bank accounts will be frozen, etc., they are scared they will have no money and they pay.

That's why this kind of thing is reported on the news and posted on local police force facebook pages.

You should have contacted your local police and told them about this scammer. You could possibly have helped someone out with a simple 2 minute phone call. Instead you take the attitude that they deserve it because you know better. {#emotions_dlg.thumbdown}

Re: BEWARE - IRS and phone scams

I actually had two of these calls about 2 months ago left on my answering machine....""This is a very important message blah blah...and requested I called back immediately or have my attorney contact them""....so I called back and said ""This is a very important message...do not call my phone number again or you WILL hear from my attorney"".
