I have never seen a hummingbird with purple feathers.  He is so beautiful.

I had the opportunity many years ago when my boys were tweens to get to hold a hummingbird in my hand.

The poor bird was in my garage and my boys and a neighbor kid were out there.  They thought the bird was a huge flying bug and one of them was chasing it swinging a wiffle baseball bat.

They hit the bird, then came in to tell me and ask what it was.  I picked the poor thing up and brought him inside.  I made some sugar water and offered it to him.  He wasn't interested.

He just sat on my finger like a statue for about 20 minutes.  I had no idea what to do.  Finally, I walked outside with him and stood there.  Another hummingbird flew by and the one on my finger took off with him.

I felt so sorry for the bird, but it was amazing to get to hold one and see him up close.  They are truly beautiful.

My sons said the neighbor hit the bird, but I don't know if that is true or not.  All three boys got a talking to.  Thankfully, the bird wasn't killed, but he probably had a headache.

@Pezzie   Wow! That is so beautiful. I've never even seen a

picture of a purple hummingbird. Those fancy tail

                feathers are so unique.

In Massachusetts we get Ruby Throated         hummingbirds.

@Carmie   What a story. How fortunate that the poor little bird survived that traumatizing ordeal.

I'm glad they you came to it's rescue. It's so sweet that he sat on your finger and was able to fly away.

@Enufstuff   It was a once in a lifetime experience.  I will never forget it.

Up close, they are so tiny, beautiful and so detailed.  I often think about that poor little bird when I see the hummers on my mandavillas.  They are really attracted to those plants.

After this posting, I realize just how much I love all the colors of bird feathers. Parrots have some beautiful feathers, and peacocks, There's so many!!!!

@Enufstuff --OH and then another time, when we got alot of snow in Feb----not a common event where I live in WA-----but the outside light on my back deck was still on-- which is close the the hummer feeder --it was early morning and a little hummer was still asleep sitting on the feeder--he just  fell off and  into the snow on the deck, there was prob at least 6 inches --face first  or beak first!!! I saw all this happen----he was a little dazed and just as I was about to open the slider, he flew away. I was stunned myself--poor little guy taking a face plant into a pile of snow--but it cushioned him so he wasn't hurt---amazing, right?
