Re: BAD BUSINESS PRACTICE OR STANDARD PROCEDURE?

@Tinkrbl44 I would ABSOLUTELY NOT PAY IT!  As someone else mentioned,  talk to a HUMAN.  If the chip on the card is faulty,  that is not your fault!  It is their responsibility to replace the card with one that works properly.   If you received a damage item in the mail,  you wouldn't pay a fee to have it replaced.

Talk to a person,  a manager,  someone who can reason.

I would report it as lost. That way they have to void the current card and give you a new one with a new number.  Should be no charge.

yes, especially if the malfunction is the fault of THEIR card!

Re: BAD BUSINESS PRACTICE OR STANDARD PROCEDURE?

@Tinkrbl44 I'm not surprised there's a charge because the personal and paperwork involved cost more than the physical card, but I wouldn't have expected $25.   I have a card which often doesn't work on the chip but does on the s;ide strip.   Hope I don't need a new card - mine isn't due for replacement for about 4 years!

Re: BAD BUSINESS PRACTICE OR STANDARD PROCEDURE?

Is the bank local or does it have a local branch anywhere.  You could walk in and see if anyone can help you.  My best guess this is not the case but perhaps, just perhaps there is a place you could go locally.

What I would do would be to keep calling and get advice from the card company.  Someone might  just help you.

Re: BAD BUSINESS PRACTICE OR STANDARD PROCEDURE?

if ANY of my credit card companies wanted to charge me to replace one of my credit cards, i would just close my account and find a new card to use. i think it is ridiculous.

Re: BAD BUSINESS PRACTICE OR STANDARD PROCEDURE?

I think some banks do charge for a lost or stolen card. I don't think those chips are as inexpensive as some feel.

It's possible the chip is dirty and as suggested wiped it with an alcohol wipe and see if that makes a difference. Or possibly the metal coating has worn and the chip is defective.

I agree if there is a local branch check in the bank.

Re: BAD BUSINESS PRACTICE OR STANDARD PROCEDURE?

The sides of my debit card were giving me a fit at the gas pump.  (nicks) never used to scrape ice or snow.

I went to my bank and spoke with the officer and he had them send me a new card.  No fee.

Re: BAD BUSINESS PRACTICE OR STANDARD PROCEDURE?

I use Debit Cards and March of last year I requested a new Card because the chip had some scratches.

Last December a friend needed help paying a bill on line. I was out so I gave her the number. Once I got home, I went on line and requested a new Card but i said it was lost and I received a new Card in 5 business days. No fee.

Re: BAD BUSINESS PRACTICE OR STANDARD PROCEDURE?

Since mine was a Debit Card I don't know if that's the reason I was not charged to have it replaced.
