The first "slam" of the year begins. The heat will be crushing....Thursday is to be 108. I cannot even imagine playing a set of tennis, much less 3 or 5, in that heat.

Patrick Rafter is back!! He will be coming out of retirement to play doubles with Hewitt. It will be wonderful to see him again....always such a class act.

1980's players are back as coaches: Edberg/Federer; Chang/Nishikori; Lendl/Murray; and Becker/Djokovic.

I was sorry to see Venus go out so early. She had been doing well at tournaments leading up to the Australian. Her playing days are numbered.

Re: Australian Open Tennis 2014

Hi, Mersha ... thanks for all the info on former players.

Yes, Venus is gone already, but little sister had no trouble today. Should be a great tournament!

Edberg looks amazing. It's hard to believe he's 48. I remember him when he was 18 and won the Australian Open on grass. What a great volley and great legs.

It's always a victory for me when I remember why I entered a room.

Re: Australian Open Tennis 2014

Hooray, tennis is back! Hoping that ESPN shows the Hewitt/Rafter doubles match(es). Thought the Thompson/Janowicz match was fun to watch. Mr. Janowicz would benefit from some anger management therapy, his temper hinders his game. Surprised to see Ms. Kvitova lose in the first round, but she has proven to be a streaky player. Hoping Madison Keys, Sloane Stephens, and Christina McHale have a good tournament, they are the future for a successful USA ladies team.

Did you hear Novak Djokovic mention that he is recently engaged to marry his long-time girlfriend? He didn't tell the date, but did refer to her as "Darling" during the post-match interview. What a sweet guy! See you at center court, DEEP

Re: Australian Open Tennis 2014

Be still my heart...Edberg and Rafter at the same tournament after all these years. You can never forget that beautiful backhand that Edberg had. He made an art out of the serve & volley. Rafter was not bad at that either.

US has several women that have outstanding potential for now and the future. Where are the US men??? I wonder if we will ever see another group like Sampras, Agassi and Courier playing at the same time again?

I did not realize that Djokovic is getting married...good for him.

I am looking forward to the next 2 weeks.

I think the Hewitt/Rafter doubles match will occur around midnight tonight. Don't know if it will be televised live.

Thanks for the info, Deep.

It is rough watching the matches with the time difference.

A tad hot down under, eh?
