@cotton4me wrote:I agree with your parents. I learned this lesson late in life but it has helped me tremendously. When going through a difficult situation I try to focus on the good aspects of it. It makes a difference. For instance, when dealing with difficult people or circumstances I think of this quote from Buddha.
“Imagine that every person in the world is enlightened but you. They are all your teachers, each doing the right things to help you learn patience, perfect wisdom, perfect compassion.”
Awesome post @cotton4me!!!

Who determines which attitudes are "proper"?
I would say that the law determines what the attitudes are toward criminal behavior. Do you think those that were happy clappy were correct in their attitude about the attacks on 9/11?

I don't know, I have yet to meet anyone who was "happy clappy" about that tragedy.

I grew up in the fifties and I remember adults saying," attitude determines altitude". I always thought it meant that if you didn't fall in line you would not be successful in life and I guess that's true. People didn't put up with much nonsense back in the day, you were expected to respond in a certain way and when you didn't there were consequences.

I would say our "collective consciences" determine acceptable attitudes

I know for a fact in my own life that attiude is everything. You can definitely change your attitude by changing your thinking. It is not easy at first, but after awhile it becomes a habit. You can choose to be kind, loving, compassionate, and forgiving to yourself and others. You can choose your good attitude before you get out of bed in the morning. And perhaps most importantly, you can choose to be grateful. No, it doesn't mean that life gets easier. But I've found that my life is much more enjoyable. Our days on this earth are too short and precious to be anything but as kind and positive as possible.
