I was told this by my parents along with  there being a bad aspect to good things and a good aspect to bad things.

The thought is that changing one's attitude will change one's behavior.

Any thoughts?

Re: Attitudes Are Everything

I don't really think you can control your attitude about something. You can keep it to yourself and proceed like you don't have that attitude but you are not able to change what you feel about anything. For instance - if I had a patient who came in to ICU from the ER and they were disgusting and filthy I would have a very negative attitude about them but I had to keep that to myself while I admitted them and then scrubbed them up. I had to be nice to them no matter what, but that doesn't mean I did not have thoughts about them, I just had to keep those thoughts to myself.

Re: Attitudes Are Everything

I agree with your parents. I learned this lesson late in life but it has helped me tremendously. When going through a difficult situation I try to focus on the good aspects of it. It makes a difference. For instance, when dealing with difficult people or circumstances I think of this quote from Buddha.

“Imagine that every person in the world is enlightened but you. They are all your teachers, each doing the right things to help you learn patience, perfect wisdom, perfect compassion.”

Re: Attitudes Are Everything

i believe changing one's attitude can change behavior.  i think it can be some work to do depending what you are working on, but yes, it can be done.

i'm having my first cup of coffee this morning so i'm not thinking clearly yet, but what comes to mind is people trying to stop smoking.  they have to change their attitude and that can change behavior.  i have a friend going through this right now for health reasons.

there are more serious issues, but i'll read what others have to say.

I think changing one's attitude could make a profound difference in a person's attitude; HOWEVER, most people won't or can't change ... living many years with one way of thinking or feeling is very difficult to change.

Absolutely. Like, when you decide to forgive someone who has hurt you, you release the power they have over you. You no longer have to even think about them.

I hold to this thinking process:

Re: Attitudes Are Everything

There are reasons people have attitudes.  Proper attitudes towards criminal behavior will deserve consequences.  No attitude change for that.

Here's one of the earlier quotes on that subject:

“The greatest revolution of our generation is the discovery that human beings, by changing the inner attitudes of their minds, can change the outer aspects of their lives.”

Who determines which attitudes are "proper"?
