Re: At what length do you stop (or never start) reading discussions here?

I've mine set to 50 per page. If it's a topic that interests me, I hang on regardless of multiquotes or pics.

If it's a personal thread, like "What you have done in this situation? I usually get exhausted at some point.

I stop reading when the quotations are longer than the post or when the conversation turns into personal attacks.

I don't limit mysefl as long as it stays interesting. The TV ones go very long, I just jump to the last page and go backwards till I'm caught up.  I also don't always read every post, although sometimes I do. I can skim and get the jist of it sometimes.

I take offence with teaser threads and try to pass them by but sometimes I can't resist opening them. Those, I just read the OP and chastise myself for being susceptible.

If the topic interests me, I read every post. I don't reply unless I've read all the previous posts and find it rude when others don't. They are, in effect, saying your thoughts aren't important but mine are.

@occasionalrain, there is some truth to this. I'd never thought of that way. I always assumed people were just too lazy or in a hurry to read all the posts before commenting.

On the rare occasion that I haven't read everything so far, I mention that fact in my post.

One problem with posting before reading is that it messes with the flow; things need to be reiterated. And the worst is one the OP or even someone else clarifies or changes something to no avail because subsequent posters didn't read it.

I've seen tons of threads in which the OP or another poster apologizes, yet posters continue to "yell" at him or her.

I feel that when a post reaches 70 or 80 replys and my reply would be 71 or 81 there is a good chance it will never be read!Woman Happy

It really depends.

If it's a lengthy topic, chances are whatever I was going to say was already said.  I might just heart as I'm reading and never respond.

I do like to read the whole thread though.

Excessive quoting, excessive pictures, excessive anyting makes me tune out.  There are a few posters who usually reply with very lengthy, multi-paragraph responses.  I usually don't bother reading those.

Yes, I am very selective about those, @Bri369 . If  it's a poster who tends that way all the time, I usually ignore.

Re: At what length do you stop (or never start) reading discussions here?

I don't read:

  1. The posts that are celebrities' death notices.  It sometimes seems like posters break their fingers in rushing to be first with the news.
  2. The posts that are either whole articles blatantly copied/pasted or plagiarized from other sites.
  3. The posts that have multiple, grayed-out quotes inside them.
  4. The posts that are deliberately originated in the wrong forums, especially those that begin with the excuse, "I thought it'd get more views here."
  5. The thread with hundreds or even thousands of replies.  My experience is that they've generally turned into cliques that  wandered away from the subject title long ago.
  6. The posts that have particular posters' names attached to them.   After a while, "you just know."

Strive for respect instead of attention. It lasts longer.
