OMG - got a VM today while I was in the shower - they want me to come in on Monday afternoon to meet with the other 2 lawyers. I honestly felt such a negative vibe in that office, at least with that main guy I'd report to, I was hoping the VM would be a "sorry".
Guess I'll go and at least see what they would offer salary wise, tho I doubt it'll be enough to justify that distance....and the negative vibe.

Why even bother interviewing for a job when you know the negatives like distance or salary will keep you from accepting it? I work with people who really need their jobs because many have an hour commute to full-time jobs that pay less than $30,000 a year. I think it is for the benefits since these are people that have families to support, and when you take into account the health insurance, the job becomes much more valuable.

That was my initial thought, too, but my sister (VP of a construction firm) encouraged me to go, because I do NOT know the salary, and it may be higher than anticipated. BTW, this job has zero benefits - no insurance, 401(k), nothing but a paycheck. Thus, they need to pay a higher salary since that's all they offer.
Also, even if this firm isn't a fit right now, lawyers join/leave firms frequently around here, and if I make a great impression on any of them, they could call me in the future.
I was contacted 6 mo after submitting my resume to a law firm to interview for a position. I didn't get an interview initially, but 6 mo later, they called because they'd kept my resume on file.

Update on the job...not good news.
I figured as much since I didn't get a call for the second interview. Received a rejection letter in the mail today. The letter stated that they had more qualified applicants than positions in their firm and that my skills did not match their needs at the moment. What??? Why did you even call me for an interview then? I thought things were improving...I guess not much. It's really wearing me down and trying to stay positive, but I don't know anymore. Thanks everyone for listening.

(((LeoGrl))).... I'm so sorry.
Like you, I don't understand why applicants weren't better screened prior to interviews. Sounds like a poorly worded generic letter of rejection. Probably doesn't even apply to your skills personally. I'll continue to pray for your best opportunities.

Thank you Q-Anu for your prayers! I really lost it when I opened the letter. I really had hopes for this one. I guess this whole job search has really taken its toll on me. My last full-time job with benefits was over 3 years ago. I worked in retail these past 3 years being seriously UNDEREMPLOYED and if it wasn't for the help of my mom, I would not have survived on those wages.
I really liked the retail job -- partially because my manager was so respectful and thankful and fun to work with along with my co-workers which made the wages I received so much easier to accept as well as the long commute. I pretty much gave up my full-time search holding out for the economy to turn around and after our store closed at the end of last year due to their not being able to pay the higher rent increase, I've been job searching non-stop.
I was lucky to get 3 interviews in the month of March and came close to getting one offer. On this particular job, the HR person actually told me it came down to me and another candidate. When I was called back for the second interview which I would be interviewing with this particular HR person's boss, she actually came out to speak and said that she wanted me for the job. However, it was a different story when I went into the room to interview with her boss. Her boss was the HR Administrator and she interrogated me to the point where she made me feel like I just got out of state prison or something, LOL! As soon as she walked into the room, I felt a vibe that she didn't like me for some reason. She even stated that her associate (the original HR person I interviewed with) and the other gentleman I interviewed with thought the world of me. Then she proceeded to say I did too well on the typing test and how most people fail it and that she even failed it. What the what? I thought to myself. Well, to make a long story short, she emailed me a rejection email several days later.
The second interview I received bad vibes throughout the interview, however, I never received any type of rejection letter or email from them at all (which is common and standard nowadays from employers who just don't give a you know what). And now this job was my third attempt which I thought I had a chance at. So all in all, just a down and yucky day for me.

Of course you're feeling down! Who wouldn't be? It is so very frustrating out there in this slow economy and with what few jobs that are available. Then we have people, like the oddball HR Admin, who for their own petty, personal reasons will choose to deny deserving applicants a fair chance! Makes my blood boil. Took me about 4 years (prior to the recession) to get my current position, here in the Houston area, which is far from ideal..... but God-willing I will hang on to it until something better presents itself. There is no job security anywhere anymore. That is the frightening reality. I keep praying for better times for our nation - knowing it's all according to His will, but He is merciful. I'll pray for your strength and courage - patience, too - as you search and wait. All my best to you, LeoGrl, and God bless your dear mother, too!

Thank you so much for you kind words! They have really helped me today more than I can express.
Part of my frustration is how much longer will this whole process take for me? Prior to taking the retail position in 2010, I was job searching when I was employed full-time for approximately a year with no luck. I was at my last job well over 6 years and I wasn't laid off -- I was purposely and strategically forced out so they would not have to pay unemployment. In a nutshell, a cover-up was going on due to an unethical lawyer working there, and he wanted those that knew too much, out. Oh, it was a horrible and stressful experience for me and I still have nightmares over it. So fastforward to today and now I'm back in this boat -- still looking for full-time office work.
Not only is there no job security these days, but what employers are doing to employees and getting away with it is unfathomable. From current employees to job applicants, it's really evil. I pray too that things will get better but it seems like the whole working world has changed so drastically. I mean just looking at some of these ads on the internet will make your head spin. Some of them are just downright nasty and mean. I've even reached out and networked with neighbors, my ex boss (who's working again but in retail), friends of family members. I hear the same thing over and over how they will keep a look-out, but you never hear back from anyone so back again on the internet I go with everyone else. Oh well, I'm rambling now. LOL! I just had to get this out of my system today. Thanks again for listening!

LeoGirl, you write so well that I can feel your frustration. Just wondering if you are older and if that might be a reason why you aren't finding employment. So many ladies I talk to who were downsized out of their jobs are in their 40's and 50's and even the resource service they used to help them find jobs said older people are eliminated from the prospect list almost immediately.

I am glad I could be here to listen, LeoGrl! It's altogether possible that the HR Admin felt threatened by you - you are likely more qualified for her own position than she is. I have witnessed some of the unfair and unethical practices myself, and I DO believe you and completely empathize with all you're going through. Only wish I could do more to help..... I will not insult your intelligence with unsolicited advice. Just praying HARD for doors to be opened to you. Hope you have a restful night!
