Only saw a bit of the funeral. I enjoyed it and loved the celebrating of her life. It did remind me of the New Orleans funerals.

First I heard it might last 5 hours....more like 10 because it's still on, Jesse Jackson looks like he's had about enough of it.

I will tell you something about some of the black churches in my area. I don't know if they all do this, or not.
They dress to the nines for church. The men are all in 3 piece suits and the ladies are all in lovely attire. They wear hats, and extra nice dresses. They look like the pictures of the woman at ascot ,(without the ridiculous hats, of course). They dress like you would at a posh wedding.
One of my friends was shown her church dresses, by a woman of color. The woman told her, at night, none of the women wore the same thing, they wore at morning services. She laughed and said, all the men had to do was to change their pocket square
You see them in their finery , on Sundays, are the restaurants ,in my area. The little boys from about age 2, on up are all in suits, and the little girls, in the type of dresses ,we used to refer to as a party dress
This could well be the culture of Aretha's church ,and her loved ones wanted her to look her best , just as if she were still alive. Of all the criticism I have heard, this strikes me as the meanest ,and cheapest shot. SO many people have no where but church to wear their finery, they treat it like a big event. This is how all women in the 50 and 60's dressed for church. They put the rest of us to shame, that go looking so casual
Aretha gave the people of color, something to be proud of . She was one of them, and she made it to the top. In a city like Detroit , that has come back from the terrible riots of the 60's, never underestimate how important this is
If making sure a loved one, looks their best ,when they are viewed by the world, is a crime, its news to me
How can you be so petty?

Thanks so much for posting that link - I actually laughed out loud at "Lugubrious Leach". Having lived most of my life near Detroit, I also smiled at his references to Faygo and Vernor's.

Wow, I haven't thought about that for many, many years. I'm 65, but can recall getting a new dress for church each year at Easter (along with a hat and gloves). Thank you for the memories that, fortunately, still exist today.

Looks like a party to me, how much fun is that, Aretha loved the Lord and I don't see why everyone should not be celebrating her going to glory.

Just ran across this post by Tobes on a Frank Sinatra thread Aretha and Frank ""What Now My Love?".

Yahoo News earlier said many were offended by Ariana Grande's dress, that It was a cocktail dress and not proper for a funeral. I read through some of the comments and some were brutal but have to say I did agree that she was inappropriately dressed. But what do you expect from a girl who licks a donut that is on a tray for sale at a donut shop.
You'd think she'd plan ahead and ask what was appropriate attire.
