My mom is alone all the time and she absolutely loves it. She's very difficult and her motto is "better to be alone than in bad company".

The only way we 'get along' is with very limited contact even though we both live in the same city. Unfortunately, she always seems to say the wrong thing but to her it's absolutely correct.

Some people are wired to like being alone and she often tells me that she never feels lonely. She reads, watches TV and even cuts me off on the phone to watch a show. I always felt guilty that I didn't go see her more often but this is what is best and what she prefers.

Lonely, no happy, yes.  Separated/divorced 25 yrs, due to trust reasons, never got involved again, worked to age 71, retired and have thoroughly enjoyed being independent and living by myself all these years.
