maybe i'm being naiive here.

if i post a photo of myself here, and you don't know

1. what state i live in,

2. if the photo is recent or a old one.

how am i being put at risk?   can someone give me a clue as to the terrible things that i am at risk for?

It is very easy to capture your photo and then do a photo search on google. If your picture is anywhere on the internet then it will match and give the searcher the info they want. For example: You post a picture here. I copy it, do a search on google and if you or anyone has posted a pic on let's say facebood or instagram etc. I am privy to that picture and whatever information is attached to that picture and so on.

@reiki604  The same applies to avatars.  It's happened.

NEGATIVE!! I'd probably break tthe camera.

Seriously, I don't photograph well. I don't know why but I don't. It's interesting how some people, in real life, look as plain as day but photograph like movie stars. I used to work with a girl like that; she looked nice--though nothing special--but in photos she looked like a movie star.

hollysunshine, why not? Is it just that you don't like to be photographed or is there some other reason? I don't mean to be nosey, but I can't help being curious.

I have no problem posting my picture, or Sally's, who, as you can see, is QUITE the photogenic rescue!

At age 60, I dont really have  any vanity issues, and privacy, well its pretty much all out there anyway, even my employer plasters my picture everywhere on the Internet, so, Oh Well.....

Exactly.  And also, depending on what someone posts on various threads, it's easy for others who are so inclined to piece it all together and zero in on location, real name, etc.  There are at least a couple of posters here who have revealed a lot - just a little at a time, but too much overall, and a lot of personal info was easily available.

I will never post my photo here.  It's far too risky, IMO, mostly because there are no settings and it potentially opens the door to anyone who just happens to log in.  I also see no reason to post a photo, so I usually use a flower or a cartoon or something similar.  No one needs to know what I look like, and I'm comfortable with the anonymity.

The other thing I see people do a lot is come to this board and announce that they posted something on a host's or vendor's FB page. They post exactly what they said and what the host/vendor responded. At that point, anyone could go to that specific FB page to see the exchange and find out the posters real name.

Yes, and a whole lot more!  I remember hearing about that happening here, and I'm sure it's happened more than once.  Some kind posters tried to be helpful, but I think the advice was ignored.  It's very easy to fall into a false sense of security and leave a trail directly to our identity and personal information if we're not careful and mindful of that all the time.
