Are there "acceptable" lies?

"That dress looks nice on you." (When it doesn't.)

"I have a prior engagement." (When you don't want to accept an invitation.)

"I voted." (When you didn't.)

I just read a book where the author believes even "social" lying is unacceptable.

What do you think?
