I would never get DH to drink vinegar.  But I've read cherry juice helps.  Don't know anything that eliminates pain. Change diet to avoid ham, bacon, processed meats,, shellfish, etc.

Re: Apple cider vinegar for gout?

I just recently had some very bad big toe pain and after checking online I think it may have been gout.  I was taking blood pressure meds that had a diuretic in them (one way to raise uric acid which causes gout).  I called my doctor and asked for the same blood pressure med without the diuretic and so far I'll have to see how it goes.

The pain was pretty bad for about a week and a half.  I found Aleve and salon pas patches seemed to help with pain.  I also drank about two tablespoons of apple cider vinegar along with a few tablespoons of cherry juice concentrate (cherries are supposed to help with gout) in an 8oz. glass of water throughout the day.  I don't know if it really helped but it did eventually clear up.

Hope yours goes away soon!

Re: Apple cider vinegar for gout?

Try tart cherry juice. I bought a bottle from Vermont Country Store, but it was a little $$$.

It is supposed to decrease inflammation and uric acid in the body and is good for gout.

I checked Trader Joe's and found a small bottle in the refrigerated area. I also looked at Whole Foods and they sell a few different brands in the vitamin area.

I found that I am not as stiff and have more movement after drinking the juice, but cannot speak about how it may impact gout.

Make sure it is TART cherry juice and not the stuff in the juice aisle.

Re: Apple cider vinegar for gout?

I've been drinking tart cherry juice (the one from Trader Joe's) and also taking a combo supplement of turmeric and tart cherry. My problem is some arthritis in my neck. I haven't noticed any discomfort now for the several months I've been taking these.

Turmeric is an all-around good supplement against inflammation so you might try it for gout. Make sure there is a pepper component in the ingredient list to aid absorbtion.

Applie cider vinegar is supposed to be a good all-around supplement too. Sometimes I mix a bit in with juice or sparkling water; it's a little harder to swallow. :-)

The high uric acid levels that cause gout also have adverse effects on ones kidneys and other organs. This is not something to fiddle around taking tart cherry juice or vinegar for. It is SERIOUS and can have devistating consequences. Why not just see your doctor, have your uric acid levels checked and confirm that is the problem then start taking Allopurinol to get those levels down to normal before you end up on dialysis. Doesn't that make much more sense ? Allopurinol is so inexpensive - my drug store doesn't even turn it in to the insurance because my $2 copay covers it.

Re: Apple cider vinegar for gout?

i have prescription medication that i take when i have gout flare ups and aleve also helps.....and when it happens i do try to avoid shellfish, alcohol, and fried/fatty foods. the holidays were "a pain" because i did have inflammation a few times and i was on my feet A LOT! i get inflammation and swelling more towards the left top portion of my left foot, towards my ankle.

for christmas, one of the gifts my mom got me was an aqua jet foot spa with heat from brookstone. Smiley Wink

My husband has gout he now takes Alloupurenal daily and watches his intake of protein. If you are looking for over the counter things to help cherry juice does help we use to buy it from GNC.

My husband had to use Cherry Juice. The REAL stuff. Now he takes some vitamin type things since the medicine the doctor gave him didn't make him feel good. No to the apple cider vinegar, haven't heard of that one. Came back to add a LOW Purine diet (see on line) was advised. No SHRIMP for sure!!
