Forgot to add, I also noticed the email was received by me at 4:51 AM Pacific standard time. So a little before 8 AM Eastern. The fact that it went out so early also speaks to somebody trying to pull a fast one by choosing an early scheduled posting.

@elated THANK YOU for helping others understand the harm caused by the phrase and the way in which iit reflects instituionalized behaviors, language, and cultural processes.

I believe it was a young person that perhaps has heard the song and was not aware of how it was used in the war movie. We are human and we make bad mistakes at times. 😇

@Lakelife62 When our Grandson was in high school they were not permitted to use the word "gyp". It was a slur.

Re: Apology email from QVC

[ Edited ]

As women we have been and are still, in certain situations marginalized, and minority women moreso. We must support one another and understand when something impacts one specific group it should impact all of us; united we stand and divided we (are) falling. Never take the attitude "Weelll, it did not effect me directly" or "Well, I was not offended". We need to do better and listen to how people are impacted by words and actions of others; empathy seems to be a dying action in the world, because so many people think only they matter, their opinion, and cannot see anything else.

The TSV email subject line was disgusting, I have seen "Full Metal Jacket" (and heard the rap and pop songs of the 80s that sampled the phrases) and knew exactly what was said and the context it is used in the movie/songs. To add insult to inury, the owner of the company being of Asian decent, and then Q using a phrase like that is even more problematic.  Oh yeah, and it was International Women's Day. We should all be upset because we are women and human kindness is better than sticking your head in the sand or rolling your eyes at the situation.

An apology email yesterday was a gesture in the right direction but that also came out at 6pm...kind of late but at least they did it.  And, how did a mass marketing email get through practices and standards, or whatever they call it for marketing practices? That is beyond my understanding.

Yes, there are a lot of hurtful things going on in the world and in our own backyards.  Large numbers of these tragedies are created from lack of understanding and based solely on hate and disregard for other people and human lives. Let's do better.

I'm glad to hear this. It most definitely is a slur referring to the Romany or gypsys as they were called. A lot of people don't realize that, just like I believe the author of the offending QVC ad and maybe their coworkers and superiors had no idea about the connotation of love you longtime.

QVC was on it, apologized and from my perspective, its over.

When you know better, you do better.

I did receive the email and deleted it because I had no idea what it was talking about. Seems it is best to keep one's mouth closed and say nothing  these days.

I am one of the people totally unaware of the slur or its history. I didn’t see the movie.

I don’t think this was intentional on the part of QVC or the person who was responsible. That person might have been younger or maybe older like myself but IMO it was a lack of awareness. QVC does seem to have a strong DEI policy & makes an effort towards inclusiveness. They wouldn’t intentionally want to insult their customers.

I think going forward, QVC will set a strong policy re communications & require review by upper management or perhaps, their DEI Department. Maybe it was proofed & the person proofing was also unaware? IDK

But, at least they acknowledged the mistake and apologized. Some state the apology took too long but from my experience in a large corporation, it takes a bit of time when sent from senior management. The communication, most likely, was written by the PR department for the CEO & passed up & in this case reviewed by the DEI person(s).

One factor one must consider is that many work from home & loose the connection & supervision by a manager?

I am sorry for those that were hurt by the slur & the lack of awareness by others like myself.

I work from home and we are all connected very much electronically.  Just because we are not physically in the same office has zero impact.
