I have a feature on my landlines put there years ago by Century Link, my phone company. When someone dials my number, they get a recording that advises them to hang up if it's a sales call. If not, they press something and then my phone rings. I get maybe 1 or 2 calls a month at most.
I don't use an answering machine, which is just like answering. They know it's a good line. I think by now, they've concluded there's nobody here and I'm off their lists.

VOIP service requires an adapter that connects to your router. That adapter is usually obtainable through a VOIP service provider and all you do with it is plug your traditional phone into one of it's plugs and the other plug is for your router.

when I had a landline, there was a way to block spam calls. My iphone blocks all spam.

True Dat. Just this week on our news channel an investigative reporter took on the subject. Quite literally, there is nothing you can do to stop it. You can keep trying to block but they just spoof or use another number to call again.
He found out that there are businesses and organizations that hire people to make these calls from an office environment. They get a commission on how many successful calls they make.
Best thing to do is just not answer. Sounds easy, right. But my phone has been ringing off the hook this week and it's driving me nuts. Yesterday they started at 7 am and went until 7 pm.

They're onto that trick. They have noise cancelling headphones.

@jackthebear - LOL it was so bad that I use to take the phone off the hook and put it back on after 9pm or when it rang I pick it up and hang up without a word. My husband would have a conversation with them and ask the person on the end so many questions that they would hang up (I guess he didn't have anything better to do).

We have a landline and DH has a smartphone, I have a "stupid phone." When we get spam calls on the landline we use the call block button but as others have said, they just call from a different number.
DH seems to get a lot of spam calls. I don't because I don't keep my phone on and only use it when necessary. Used to get calls in Chinese but that has stopped.
Another downside to living in the 21st century--LOL!!
