Lots of good ideas.
I live in the San Juans (considered north Puget Sound). You can search for hotels or cottages online. Lots of places to stay.
The ferries goe out of Anacortes. You can fly to Seattle, rent a car, drive to Anacortes (approx. 2 to 2.5 hours), sightsee around there, stay overnight, then take the ferry. The main places to visit (I think) if you are a first timer would either be San Juan Island or Orcas Island.
Here is a link to one website: http://www.visitsanjuans.com/
If memory serves, you live in SoCal, right? If you want to avoid SeaTac, you can fly out of LA to Bellingham on Allegiant Airlines (much smaller, easier airport to navigate.)
Then you can rent a car in Bellingham and drive down to Anacortes (I hour trip instead of two and not as busy.)

Thanks for all the responses! It's a great starting point. I had totally forgotten about AAA, since we haven't take a vacation since the Mesozoic Era (maybe a slight exaggeration). I will send DH to AAA to pick up some maps and information.
I can't remember offhand which of you asked what our interests were. We like being near the ocean, but I prefer to stay dry, lol. Day trips are nice and I'd love to spend at least a day in Seattle. I am not an outdoor adventurer.. I prefer sidewalks, antiquing and restaurants.
Again, thanks for the information. (BTW, rain sound lovely ![]()

Just remember that all we get is RAIN, RAIN, and more RAIN!!! So pack for rain. We've had almost 50" of rain since October. Not a fan of the constant grey and wet, myself; been here for 60 years.

Save yourself that trip to AAA - checkout their website and other Washingon State tourist sites - i think you would like Poulsbo, Bainbridge Island and somewhere in the San Juan Islands but the websites should help a lot. Good luck - it is lovely here year round.

Be sure to take a ferry somewhere. There is lots to see. I'm not fond of Seattle, and I avoid it. The waterfront is nice, but again, I just stay out of Seattle. LaConner is a fun little place to visit. Anything near the mountains is great.
