Yup, my small town had this "find the rock" throughout the city to win prizes during our yearly Summer freedom festival. It certainly was fun for the kids.

Yep, its in N. Virginia and the surrounding burbs.  Some are hidden better but I've seen a lot left out in the open for small kids to find.  

ETA:  I leave them for kids rather than take and re-hide them.  I've seen some pretty fancy ones where ppl have gotten "fake jewels" from craft store and glued them and I've recently seen one beautifully painted of an angel where someone put a memorial to her daughter who died in a car accident.

Seems like everyone in my (former)hometown in California desert is doing it and posting about it on Facebook.
