Anyone have experience with long haired chihuahuas?

I don't have direct experience, but I was chatting with a woman who was carrying a long-haired chihuahua and she said the dog was a wonderful dog. He was very laid back and not yippy. He was also gorgeous; I think they're much prettier than the short-haired ones.

I had a long haired chihuahua for 17 years and loved every minute of it. I had never had a chihuahua before but when I saw her (she was 3 months old) I couldn't resist & had to have her. She grew up with my cats & I think she thought she was one of them. Brandi wasn't a yippy chihuahua but she did get nervous at loud noises, thunder & fireworks. I think that;s part of the breed. She was very smart & loyal to her family. I found her to be very energetic, playful, and an extreme lap dog. I just loved her and I think you will love the one you're adopting. I would definitely have another chihuahua in my life.

I've never owned a Chihuahua, but I have been around some. I think they are great little dogs, though they have their idiosyncrasies which I'm guessing you've already read about. The only thing I'd like to add is that you need to be careful mixing young children and Chihuahuas because they are more fragile than other dogs and can be hurt if roughly handled or tossed off the couch or bed.

I have always wanted one, they are adorable. My neighbor has one that is a mix and every time we walk by she lays down and pretends like we can't see her. It is so cute. She doesn't bark much and loves to walk.

Re: Anyone have experience with long haired chihuahuas?

I have one. We found her a month ago just wandering around. I posted a thread about her here What an incredible little dog. She's just been such a wonderful addition to our family. I had a short hair chihuahua mix as a teen and I've loved the long hairs so I can't believe we found her.

Her coat is pretty easy to take care of once I got the matts off her that she had when I found her. I use a slicker brush on her, especially behind her ears where she was the most matted. I try and brush her every other day or so and I'm planning on bathing her once a month with Wen kids.

She loves going places and gets all excited when I get dressed to leave the house, hoping she can go too. She rides in her booster seat with harness in the car very well and is friendly to everyone although sometimes a little shy at first. I think as with all dogs it's imported to socialize them well and to spend time training them.

She spent some time on leash in the house learning "leave it" and now she gets along great with our cats and our other dogs. It's hilarious seeing a 4 lb chihuahuha try and jump up on a 70 lb German shepherd to try and get her to play with her LOL. They get along great though.

I'm sure your new family member will bring you years of joy and entertainment LOL.
