We have a lot of them in my city - they have gone crazy with them here. I have seen accidents (only on the multi-lane ones with on and offs from hwys), people not yielding to traffic on the LEFT, some going the total wrong way, and changing lanes and they don't seem to even be aware that they are changing lanes. I especially hate a couple places where they took 1 or2 simple stop lights or signs and made 4/5 multilane roundabouts one after another after another after another right in a row. It is difficult to maneuver some of these even when you know what you are doing. I almost always have someone not even looking to the left and cutting front of me or being in a turn only roundabout lane and trying to go straight.
Some go through them like they are a race track. The speed limit for most roundabouts is 15 MPH. There was a campaign on TV to slow down on them and look to the LEFT.
A single one out of town, fine, most people can handle it. We actually had one voted down on a busy intersection, it was insane to try and put one in there and people protested until they finally listened to reason and logic.
Who's idea was this anyway - did they have nothing better to do that day??!!!

I hate them!
If I'm going someplace alone and not familiar with the area, the first thing I ask is, is there a circle I have to go around. If I do then I decline, that's how much I hate them.

@HerRoyaLioness Goit a flyer in the mail and no doubt it is a done deal. Someone has extra money to spend,no douibt. We are a rural community. Most people are nice and wonderful but on this particular road everyone seems to be rude and in a hurry. Speeds of 70mph or better all too often. This is an accident or two or three waiting to happen.

We have been blindsided and our local and state govt say ITS A DONE DEAL and we can meet to talk about it. Not happy because they will take two months to make it happen with many detours. People rarely yield because in our area... it is always ME FIRST.
@bonnielu- we have several of them where I live. You get used to them.
I'll be really impressed if yours is built in just two months. The 3 closest to me took seemingly forever to construct.

@gidgetgh I will avoid it like a plague. We have some in the area and they have more accidents there than any traffic light I can think of. People don't know which lane to enter, they do not know how to yield and they are in a hurry. And this is a rural town which I will admit is fed by bigger cities within 50 miles in either direction. City people are moving in. LOL.

They are called “circles” in my area too. And some worked differently. You had to learn each one.
Drivers in some circles never had the right of way (as they should) and you were expected to yield to incomers. It was just the way those circles worked.
I don’t think there were more more accidents in the circles.

I hate roundabouts. People don't understand how to go through them. It takes patience which a lot of drivers don't have.
Our city thought they'd be great and installed some and there were so many accidents that they were removed.

I grew up with rotaries and driving in them is no big deal. They keep traffic flowing faster during the rush hours and off rush hours it is just a different bit or road to traverse. The people in the rotary have the right of way. If someone doesn't yeild, give them a loud blast on your horn and drive them off into a ditch! They will learn the next time they try to cut in. Also, if you miss your exit, keep going around in the rotary till it comes up again. They don't charge you for how many times you go around and around.

Hubby and I were in Ireland several years ago, and we were trapped in a round-about near Blarney Castle. I mean trapped. It was maybe 4 lanes thick, very crowded. We could not get in the outside lane to exit, and went around maybe 4 times. Finally a kindly Irishman called to us from his car - are you having trouble? He guided us out of the round-about and had us follow him the back way to Blarney Castle! It was one of those things you look back on and think, we could have been killed! (either by the traffic in the round-about, or by the ax murderer in the country side)
Locally, our few round-abouts are much more manageable. You do get used to them.

I grew up with "circles" and learned to drive on them. Once you get the hang of which lane you need to be in to exit it isn't a big deal.
When I have traveled and come across a circle, I might have to go around twice to get in the proper lane for an exit, lol.
