The button on top of the Echo Show 8" to the far left will keep her from talking (it acts like a mute button) without you asking her something. It will have a red line across the bottom of her screen.
You can play music AND THEN set it to mute (on the left top button)and still listen to your music. I ask Alexa to play Ricky Nelson on Pandora and she brings up the station and then I mute her. I also mute her when demos of her are QVC etc.
The first tall Echo also has a microphone button on top of it that will do the same thing.
Just a few hints that I hope help you to enjoy it more.
I also always have the camera off and will turn on if I ever want to the Drop In feature.
***Forgot to add that if you go into Settings and Alexa Privacy you can delete that day or ALL history easily. I do this every day when done using it. Not that anything was much anyone would want to hear. ![]()

@riley1 Those African Grays must be remarkable, like having another person around. I had a co-worker who had one and claimed the bird knew 1200 words and used them appropriately. Does Simon tell you you're beautiful? That would make him worth his birdseed.

@Kachina624 - Not me, but he says he is pretty, lol. He has quite a varied diet: chicken, cottage cheese, hard & scrambled eggs, fruits/veggies, mashed potatoes and of course his pellets and a little seed. He also loves peanuts, walnuts, almonds.

We've had the same experiences regarding advertising.
We have different Alexa devices that my MIL sent us.
They're no longer plugged in, either.

I think it also depends on where you put the Echo. Putting it in a quiet room works best for us. It won’t be taking in any info that way. Alexa was talking to the TV when we had it in the den. Now we have it in the DR which we rarely use. SIL works in tech management.. When the Echo was introduced, each employee was given a dozen of them. He gave us one and we are happy with it, but see no need for the newer versions of it.

We have one of the first Echos. We use it to ask questions for information and for notifications for my package arrivals. Rarely use it for music. We use the Bose for that.
one of my echos is attached to my BOSE.....so i play music from sirius/xm OR from amazon music and it comes through my BOSE.

You can call anyone whose number is in your cell phone by using your voice.
It won't call 911 but you can call a friend and ask them to call for you.
If you should fall, you can't always get to your cell phone. Alexa is always there!
Yes, and you can also designate someone as your emergency contact. If you tell Alexa to call for help, "she" will call and text that number. :-)

I have had my Echo, Alexia, for about 2 years now. That led to smart plugs. I absolutely love these devices! "She" is the best kitchen timer! I have her remind me to give the dogs their heart worm pills, wake me at a certain time, give me the daily weather report, etc. When I'm on vacation (or away from home), I can turn the lights off or on. You can use it to play games. There is one game in particular that I like to play; Name that song. It is similar to "Name That Tune". In the summer, I can take Alexia out to the patio and listen to music out there. Great little device!
