^^^^ I completely agree. From Ireland, we were first through customs in Boston.

Well, I won't be haunting the thread, as I have to go offline and work, but some people book first class because they like the free drinks.
Flying is only pleasant when the people around one are fairly pleasant. On the whole, I have had better luck in the slightly upgraded "more room" seats. It is very nice to board early, even if one gets a turkey as a seat mate. A two-year old in the seat behind can be awful in coach, but actually is OK in first, as his or her feet are too far away to reach the seat forward.
The food in first class these days is absolutely horrible and shouldn't factor into a decision. I requested a vegetarian meal on Aer Lingus when travelling to Ireland on business a few years ago and got . . . macaroni and cheese, a wedge of cheese, and cheesecake. It was like a Monty Python skit.

Yes, we use miles to fly business class on flights of 5 hours or more. Once in a while we pay extra at the gate for shorter flights. The last time we paid was on a flight from Atlanta to Baltimore. It cost 30.00 more for each of us one way. I felt that was affordable. Other than that time, we fly coach on shorter trips.

Flew 1st class a couple of times because we released our seats upon request. Waiting a few hours to fly gave us generous vouchers and flights on later, less full 1st class flights. I think that was Midwest Airlines. As a child, we often flew 1st class because my dad was a TWA employee and those were the only seats left. The first time I ate goat cheese.

If the trip is short, I fly economy, a little longer and I pay for the economy plus seats (which only get you about 6 inches more legroom). However, if I'm flying overseas, I have flown first class.
