"Fascinating" is a diplomatic adjective for "the cast of characters" you are referencing. ;-)

You, and anyone else interested in discussing politica, are welcome to find one or more political internet discussion boards to post on.  This is not one of them.

It would probably be safer to post on/and have a Politics forum, than it is to deal with Wen in the Beauty forum!

I miss being able to discuss current events, not necessarily politics but I understand why it's not allowed here.  It never ends well, it doesn't take long before posts take a detour to Nutsville.

The highlighted portion illustrates just one of the reasons discussion often fails.  Comparisons could be made without resorting to the black/white or either/or argument, but all too often they are not.

For example, why not just say what you're going to say but leave off the part that explains how much worse you think the "other" is.

I get that it is tempting, but it is not necessary.

This is probably irrelevant, but I used to know someone who, whenever I'd say I was in favor of something (whether a type of dog, a shade of color, or almost anything), she would immediately tell me that that she liked the "other" and made the assumption that someone could not appreciate both.  How that makes sense is beyond me.  Is it possible people are that limited?

It's entirely possible that people are that self-centered and opinionated. We have to deal with them in real life, as well as on every BBS and discussion forum everywhere.

There are many people for whom there is only ONE ("right") way and it's their way or the highway. They are "honest", they "tell it like it is", etc. They have learned to spout what they feel are acceptable excuses for their communication disabilities.

The fact that such people are everywhere, don't see or feel the need to change and aren't going to stop, is the reason that just about any discussion on just about any topic on all but the most strictly moderated forums has the potential to degenerate into name-calling and insults, and often does. Add in those who do it deliberately, getting the warm fuzzies when they "score" what they think is a clever insult/put-down, and you have instant ugliness.

Agreed. Look at some of the more infamous discussions that degraded in to fighting.

And people think that it would be possible to have a civil discussion about politics?

Never going to happen, my friends.

Never, ever going to happen.

And if one thinks that it's possible to have a civil discussion about politics, then they are incredibly nieve.

Since most people have posted to tell you that your thinking is wrong, I will post to say I understand what you are saying.

Whether it's politics or whatever, I just don't want to post here much anymore.  And I really hardly EVER post on "Community" at all.  Either the same people attack your opinion, or the moderators take away even polite posts that are "too delicate" for their consumption.  The group thinkers have gotten their way here.

It's their board, and they can do what they want to.  I just choose to post very little now.  Which means I go to their website much less than I used to.  QVC made their choice, I have made mine.

I totally understand what you mean.

Yes AND no. Seems like nowhere online, on hardly any forum / website / comment / opinion section, can one discuss anything without being roundly attacked for not agreeing. Perhaps we should start our own website Smiley Wink. I do draw the line at name-calling. One can disagree civilally. I DO agree with you in regard to some of the trivial nonsense, but once in awhile it's a nice break / stress reliever.

I wish we could have productive political discussions but some folks just can't contain their extreme dislike for those who hold opinions they don't like.

There have been times I've seen those who argree with each other put someone else down for a differing view and have a discussion back and forth about how stupid that other person is, poking fun at the other person for holding that viewpoint.  They cross the border of disliking the views to blasting the person who holds that view.

I understand Q's desire to keep politics off here.

I've seen this too, and it is allowed to go on in areas other than politics.

It happens in health related topics (vaccines), it happens in 'science' related topics, and others. I guess my point is that it goes on, and is allowed to stand by the mods quite often, on topics other than politics, so I guess I don't see why, if they aren't going to stop it in those areas, the decide that politics are the place to draw the line.

It really doesn't matter if anyone "see's why" or agrees. It's their house, they make the rules and if someone doesn't like it no one is forcing you to post here.

Yes, it does matter.

If Q is going to make rules, then they need to enforce them across the board. They need to be sure they aren't just closing down political discussions that go off the rails but the same needs to apply to all the other areas I mentioned, when the same thing occurs there.

And quite frankly, it very often doesn't happen.

Not to mention, the moderators would be occupied 24/7 with people hitting the Report button every 5 min and mass deletions. It would be a big waste of their time. I'm sure that's why they ****** so many things in the bud already. It's the few who screw it up for the many, but the many are always PO'd at QVC rather than the people who just have to get their digs in.
