I really feel for everyone stuck on that highway...
It happens a lot here in Western NY - I myself got stuck twice for over 8 hours one time and 3 days the other. You don'tknow fear and anxiety until you are stuck in a car for hours with minus zero windchills....and your gas and cell phone batteries getting low.
I doubt people in KY are used to this...it's HORRIBLE!!!!

I live in Kentucky. No, this isn't typical winter weather!

I saw a brief news clip a mom and her very young baby stuck in her car in the snow for hours on end. Someone brought them water for her baby's bottle, she said. Can babies survive in ice cold cars, drinking cold water? Oh, and p.s. That baby didn't look overly bundled up, (warm) either.

I know, I know, but I keep asking Why, why, why are all of those folks out there in a snow storm? Especially if they have young babies with them. I really don't get it, but, obviously, I don't live in snow country. Sorry, and I'll have to stop commenting on this subject.

^That's a good question, Romary! When we heard the forecast we stocked groceries and realized we'd be inside for several days. Have no idea why these people were out like this!

YorkieonmyPillow: Thanks, Yorkie. I just can't help myself. Visions of that dear baby keep popping into my mind...........literally makes me have a sick feeling.

I'll tell you how I got stuck (and I think it's the same for a lot of folks)...
You are on the interstate, driving along, doing fine and then everything come to a halt. There are trucks WAY ahead that have jacknifed, blocking the roadway.
If exits are 20-30 miles apart, and the median is impassible (either a deep water filled ditch or a road with fencing) - you have NO WAY to get off or to move forward. You have to wait for emergency vehicles to get to the trucks and remove them from the road first.
This is what happened to me the first time. There were 3 jacknifed trucks between me and the next exit. It was below zero and the wind was blowing.
The second time involved people abandoning their cars, right on the Thruway. There was no way to get around them. Then the truckers hunkered down and went to sleep right on the Thruway. It took me 8 hours to get off the Thruway (usually 15 minutes in between exits) and I then ran out of gas on my way to find a hotel. I had to abandon my car too on the side of the road. It was covered with snow, then was hit by plows - over $6,000 in damage. It took 3 days to get my car, get gas and get the battery re-charged.
All it takes is a few trucks to block the roads. They then stop up all traffic behind them, including the plows that could help keep the roads passable.

terrier3: Thanks for the explanation. I've had a sick feeling, seeing that very young baby stuck in that freezing cold car, not overly bundled. I'm going to take a couple of ant-acids, as I just can't stop thinking about it.

This might lighten the mood -
The first time I was stranded, I was behind an SUV filled with guys on their way to ice fish. 4 guys and a case or two of beer. When they realized we weren't going anywhere - they cooled the beer in the snow and started enjoying the situation. This, of course, led to MANY trips out into the blizzard, for comfort stops. I had to sit behind them and watch the snow get more and more yellow.
Then , I had to "go" too. The guys were very nice about it, but I was mortified!!!! After that, I started keeping a bucket and a roll of TP in the car at all times.
We had a few hundred cars stranded on the Thruway once...right in the middle of the city. A local priest got dozens of pizzas and got guys on snowmobiles to deliver pizza, water and TP to people in the cars.

I live in Kentucky.
I am strongly considering a move to Tahiti.
Or Aruba.
Anywhere there are sandy beaches and Mojitos.
