It's probably a good idea, keeping in mind not to give out too much info and/or don't make any obnoxious comments about other residents (what's bothering you, your pet-peeves about others and what they're doing or not doing right, etc., etc.) It could become a slight problem, only if you let it.

So, I just joined. They wanted full name and address as well as email, and spouse's full name & address. They also try very hard, right when you're in the act of signing up, to get you to send email invites to everyone you know in the neighborhood and are pretty intrusive up front about pushing this. Ugh. Tacky. The "neighborhood founders" get brownie points with nextdoor for referrals & sign-ups. I'm not sure if they get $$ or some other kind of benefits but I suspect they do, otherwise why push so hard?
BUT - you can skip all that. They have my name, email address and street address. They aren't getting more than that.
And lol, first post I see is a rant about being cut off on the road, just like the FB groups. And lost/found dogs. So, not much different than I already had access to. But we shall see. These things are only as good as the contributing members. People do seem sightly more classy than the FB group ;-(

I've come to really like twitter, if you're interested in that. It's all in your control from what I can tell. If anyone gets a troll, they can block him or her.
I used to wonder how my daughter always had the news first, it was because of twitter.

@Noel7, the group(s) being discussed in this thread are geographical neighborhood groups - getting strictly local-interest news and info in your 'hood ;-) My 'hood is lost dogs and there's a controlled burn at such-and-such. But I admit it would have been valuable during the February storms, for those who had power.
I have a Twitter account that I think I have maybe posted on 2-3 times in 10 years - usually after an earthquake, lol. I joined mostly to follow British actors and a few other celebs I like. I don't follow anyone I know IRL. I go and look every 2-3 months or so. It's okay, but as annoying as FB (i.e. Zuckerberg's fiddling with it) can be, I feel more comfortable there. I tried Instagram, but I post the same pix to FB and everyone I share with is on FB, so didn't really see the point in Instagram for me.

I belong to Next Door for my neighborhood. When you sign up, you can make a lot of your information private, which is what I did. I have gotten a lot of good information from the group. I needed someone to trim some trees for me, and got quite a few names from asking the group. People report lost and found dogs, break-ins, etc. It's helpful to me.

@Moonchilde wrote:@SeaMaiden, I've no doubt these groups can be good, but it depends on who starts the group and how they take care of it, how ethical they are, etc. - and it depends on where you live (geographically) and what kind of people your wider-area "neighbors" are.
If the local nextdoor group is like the local FB groups, the people and posts annoy me. It's like Real Housewives of X. It's either "my dog got out" or some *itchy diatribe that has no purpose other than to *itch.
I probably would at least give it a try, but as I said in a previous post, I don't like the idea of being targeted with so much info required upfront when I don't know the people running it.
Wow, @Moonchilde, you must have a massive pollen problem where you live. I don't think anything else could account for such widespread itchiness in a neighborhood.
Sitting at home all day staring out the window ala Gladys Kravitz and dribbling at the keyboard will do it to ya, apparently.
lol! too true![]()

@Moonchilde, As I stated earlier, I STARTED our neighborhood NextDoor. I have never received any rewards, money or otherwise, which is fine with me. I just started it to be helpful to other neighbors... reporting crime, etc.
Others discussed how much personal information they had to give out. I don't remember that. They have my name and email address and I receive notification of posts on a daily basis. Sometimes I don't get a chance to read them. IF you want to email someone in the group, you must go through NextDoor.com - you cannot email people directly - which I think is a good thing.

Our subdivision doesn't have it. I see no reason not to join if it became available.

@meem120 wrote:No, thats legit. You go to their website/app and join with your neighbor hood and surrounding neighborhoods if you wish. The postcard are sent at a members request to neighbors that may not know about the service. I find it very helpful, from knowing about strange cars/people in the neighborhood, to mis delivered UPS packages etc. It also lets you know about community events and gaage sales etc. Mostly I like it for strange cars sitting outside someones house at 2am etc and to keep an eye out. Sometimes pixs are taken along with license numbers. Its a great idea
@meem120 All the things you mentioned is why I like it!
