@software wrote:I signed up for this probably a year ago, but I belong to a closed neighborhood group on FaceBook and never use NextDoor.
I like being connected to my neighbors. I see posts about burglaries, lost pets, traffic problems, fish fry's, you name it, someone posts about it. I like my FaceBook group I don't see the need to use NextDoor
I got a nextdoor invite but haven't responded yet. I'm on two FB groups for my rural area and every bit of it is lost dogs or either *itchy or whiny in some way. A lot of it pretty rude, or from very stupid people. I have no reason to think nextdoor would be any different, but I might try just to see.

I STARTED a NextDoor neighborhood. My next door neighbor had just had her house broken into in the middle of the day. So I began this group and it has expanded to several area neighborhoods. Some useful information is posted, as well as safety warnings. I've had no problems at all with it.

We belong to the same group. It's invaluable if you lose your pet and you can post immediatly to your neighborhood or other nearby developments. There are updates on events, suspious behavior, free items or items for sale, place to get recommendations on businesses or help, job postings, and more. Personally, I've sold some items on the one I belong to, given away items that I can no longer use (blinds), and have received valuable information about recent car break-ins, etc.. You can choose to be involved and post, or just read what others residents concerns are.

@Moonchilde I signed up for nextdoor.com and enjoy it. It is not only interesting, and entertaining, but helpful and useful. I was a bit of a skeptic at first, but now look forward to reading each day what might be discussed or shared.
I found a person to do siding repair and fix a small plumbing issue the same day I posted I was looking for someone..... where before next door.com I was looking everywhere for someone and no one was interested because it was a smaller job. Neighbors share contractors and repair person's names that are fair and honest. That is so great!

@on the bay, that's the reason I haven't joined. All the personal info required. I don't need to provide that much info on the FB groups. Some things you don't mind neighbors knowing, some things you do mind - and who knows what happens to that info if the host computer is hacked.

Our neighborhood did that when we lived in GA. very informative and not invasive at all. If it is like ours, the reason you got the Post Card was because one of your neighbors invited you.

@SeaMaiden, I've no doubt these groups can be good, but it depends on who starts the group and how they take care of it, how ethical they are, etc. - and it depends on where you live (geographically) and what kind of people your wider-area "neighbors" are.
If the local nextdoor group is like the local FB groups, the people and posts annoy me. It's like Real Housewives of X. It's either "my dog got out" or some *itchy diatribe that has no purpose other than to *itch.
I probably would at least give it a try, but as I said in a previous post, I don't like the idea of being targeted with so much info required upfront when I don't know the people running it.

@SharkE - Our neighborhood does this. I don't. I'm not trying to be unfriendly - I just don't have time to keep up with everything. We have a neighborhood watch representative, who e-mails important information. ![]()

@SharkE wrote:I got a postcard like letter in the mail from nextdoor.com saying all the neighbors on our street were using a free private online network to keep all the neighbors up on what was going on in regards to safety concerns, local events, what somebody has for sale/free, service provider recommendations, etc.
You go to website and type in a code they sent you to verify and join the network.
Sounds good , but, I'm always skeptical as to whether it's 'phishing', or really just neighbors helping one another.
Anybody else belong or have any information if this is really innocent or something sinister down the road?
I have never received a notice, but I have heard of those, they had a story on our local news, they said it was primarily used to help reduce crime and for safety and a way for neighbors to get to know each other. But those I heard were started by a Home Owners Association, I would find out more about who the originator was and talk to others in your neighborhood to get a better feel about it......Or maybe even call your local law enforcement to check it out .....
