I saw someone the other day with one of these.

It's a knee scooter.  She had a full cast on her lower leg,

but was scootin' around like it was no issue...and very manageable.

You bend to place your leg on the pad & push off with your other leg.   HTH!

I had to go a few months w/o putting any weight on my foot. I knew from past experiences that crutches would not work for me so I rented a knee scooter. It made a world of difference. Seriously.

Re: Any Tips or Tricks on How to Survive Life on Crutches?

I used a cloth handbag to carry things from room to room. It is very, "boho-looking," and has a really long cloth strap -super long.I put the strap around my neck so the bag became a crossbody bag, allowing me to be hands-free. I used that handbag to carry items from room to room, and when going to physical therapy as well. The long cloth strap created a hands-free way for me  to hold on to things while in the house, and to bring things with me when I had to leave the house to go to physical therapy, doc appt., etc.

It is a cloth handbag, so obviously I did not put food in it. However,  I did keep my water bottle in it. That bag was a lifesaver-whether I was using crutches, a walker, or a cane.

Good luck,  Brinklii, I hope you find solutions that work well for you!

Re: Any Tips or Tricks on How to Survive Life on Crutches?

I was on crutches during my third trimester of pregnancy.  They couldn't x-ray me so they treated it like a sprain when it reality it was a shattered ankle.

I never did figure out how to balance a pregnant belly on crutches, so a couple of times I got on my knees and crawled to the bathroom.

can can I ask how does it work.. Do you put your bad knee on the scooter seat?  It doesn't hurt the bad foot by leaning on it?  This looks ingenious!

my advice for those on crutches is learn how to use them properly, and always be aware do trying to keep your body in alignment.  Using crutches the wrong way, and limping, or compensating only cause problems that can be worse than the original injury.  Ask me how I know, lol😸

@shoekitty - the knee attached to the leg with the bad foot is the knee that rests on the seat. I had a tall boot on so that also helped to protect it. There was nothing painful about it at all.

I was was able to carry a glass of water & meals with the help of the basket. Not to mention other things. While it was a bit inconvenient, I took it in the car (trunk or back seat) to doctor appointments and to the store when necessary.

It gave me more independence. I'd have had a hard time getting around anywhere at all even at home. Again, I was not allowed to put any weight on my foot at all. I'd never have been able to do that with crutches. The last time I tried crutches I fell down.

Re: Any Tips or Tricks on How to Survive Life on Crutches?

Brinklii...

Sorry to hear of your accident... Smiley Sad

In 2007 I broke my left foot in several places.  It was a very bad break and required surgery and a placement of a 3 inch screw.  I had to be off my foot for 8 months...It was a long process...

Anyway, I have bad arthritis in my shoulders and I could not use crutches.  What I found that WORKED FANTASTIC...Was a "Regular Size Walker", the kind with a seat and a basket attached.

It is soooo much better then the small knee scooter.

When I went to my Orthopeopedic Surgeon...He said, "That is brillant". He immediately called in the head of "Physical Thearpy" and said, "You have to come up to my office now, I have to show you something".  The Physical Thearpist said, "OMG" that is brillant and wanted to know did I come up with it on my own...?  Yes...I told them it was my mothers when she came to visit us in CA.  I had it for her...It was up in the rafters in the garage and I told my husband to go get it.  It works fantastic!

You simply place your knee on the seat of the walker and peddle with your good leg.  You are standing and are at your regular height.  The wheels on the walker are bigger and more sturdy.  Everything is at your height...You are not bending ever.

I hope everything works out ok for you "Brinklii" ...

Think positive.

You should use a walker, one without wheels; much easier

Thanks for the great tip, Bella! We have my father's old walker like that out in the garage. DH just went out after it. Smiley Happy

Re: Any Tips or Tricks on How to Survive Life on Crutches?

I was on crtuches for a couple of months about 6 years ago (when I was 60!). It was horrible but I did get better at it as time went on. Carrying thigs was the worst. I carried many things in a travelon bag that I hung around my neck and you can manage to carry something with your fingers while still holding the crutches. It is not fun so just rest when you can. Best of luck to you. Hope it heals quickly!!!!

Re: Any Tips or Tricks on How to Survive Life on Crutches?

Wishing you much better luck than me with that! I seriously just gave up - never could get the hang of it... Or maybe, I was just too paranoid about falling bad again which got me to that point to begin with... I doubt it would not  be too hard to master though if you put your mind to it... I suppose..,.

Then again, those little scooters are wonderful though!

Or, you could think of it as "practice makes perfect".

Either way - good luck with your recovery.
