Re: Any California drivers affected by the Mudslides?

OH my goodnes Renna, I'm so happy that no one got injured!  How horrible..... The Grapevine is a white knuckle ride for me too... the drops off the edge are fierce and you're always on guard for a semi that is going too fast (with or without breaks).  The photos upthread are appreciated but you really can't see how harrowing it really is.

@Puzzle Piece

sea snakes are those things they make wallets from, lol!  Gross.  Sure does sound like the sea snakes are out of their element.  I hope if El Nino comes it will come here to NoCal!

NOAA weather bureau reminds us that El Nino means rains harder than norMAL. But they don't start any earlier than the regular rain season.  For us here in Silicon Valley the rain season is late Dec to April.  The last 5 years have been dry, but when normal we get rains here and then starting with Halloween, then about end of year Janurary we start getting the long rains.  But shoot I haven't seen more than 2 days of rain in a row since 2006 I think

@shoekitty I thought that eels were what the wallets are made.  I wouldn't want to be into harvesting the sea snakes for anthing.

yes techincally you are correct about the eel thing.  They do make purses and exotic skin purses, trims from some eels, and a type of sea snake (not these sea snakes) as well.  But I am using the word freely and very loosely.  And let me tell you, the sea snakes that washed dup in Oxnard and Ventura beaches are not "usable, no wallets here."LOL!  It is so scary, especially for beach goers!!.  They are venomous and dangerous.!!  I was going to post picture and the warning, but it was so gross.  I am not a snake lover, although I know nature needs them.  UHG.  Anyway for anyone who isi nterested, here is an artcle and picture of the snake that is "WANTED"

@NoelSeven

Have you had any threatening rain your way?  We had 20-30% chance, but skies are clearing.  At least it was cooler today.  78 degrees.  I am ready for rain

Hi Q4U, when we drive the Grapevine it's usually early morning that way we miss a majority of the traffic. We've never seen a semi lose control or breaks that would be scary. Once we hit snow but it was very light.

101 is a beautiful drive just add hours to the drive home lol.

Re: Any California drivers affected by the Mudslides?

@MaRina, we used to live down in San Diego but would make a trip north every few years to visit relatives in the mid-west, and the Grapevine was not an anticipated thrill....  often we were pulling a trailer and going up the thing we would slow and slow some more even with a suped-up Suburban with the largest engine you can buy, we had extra cooling, an extra large gas tank, I mean that thing was tough and we kept chugging past most of the really slow traffic and would finally crest that thing!  Going back and going downhill was a whole 'nuther experience!  It's been five years since we moved and drove our final trip through the area.... but we plan to go down to San Diego to visit one year...
