Watching the evening news and just saw that a first grader got off the school bus, then the bus ended up hitting and killing the child. This happened in Festus Mo which is just south of St. Louis.  They interviewed the principle who appeared holding back tears. The driver has not been charged as of yet. So many tragic events this month. I pray for everyone to stay safe this holiday season, love on your family members and friends if you can. That poor family has lost a sweet little boy.

Re: Another heartbreaking story

This is so heartbreaking and has been all over my news feed as I grew up not far from Festus.  Although I lived in St Louis County for decades and decades, I'll always be from JeffCo.

Re: Another heartbreaking story

Oh that is sad. In our state (last year),  man in a pickup truck passed a bus on the right and killed a young child and injured a sibling. This year, a pit bull (family pet known for aggression) killed a mother as she rescued her toddler who had fallen in front of it. I can't help but wonder how families get through the holidays with such awful memories.

I know a family that this same school bus tragedy happened to years ago. Their 5 year old little girl was killed when hit by the school bus, after exiting the bus. So tragic. The mother saw the accident happen, as she was there to pick her up.

Re: Another heartbreaking story

On Tuesday, December 21, a 10-year-old boy was rushing-walking to school in Erie, Pennsylvania.  He was running late.  He was hit and killed by a Transit Authority bus.  In the driver's defense, the traffic light was green.  I'm sure there will be a thorough investigation.  Such a tragedy for the boy's family, the school community and the community at large.

Oh dear.  Smiley Sad   This is a horrible tragedy.

I saw this happen as a kid, being on the bus at the time.   They stopped and some very young kids got off. Well, this one girl dropped something and it blew in front of the bus.   etc etc and there was no way the driver could have seen her.

How could anyone ever recover from that - the family of the little child as well as the bus driver?  Such a tagedy.

Re: Another heartbreaking story

Such A Terrible Tagedy... I thought these were used on school buses.

school bus crossing arm is a safety device intended to protect children from being struck while crossing in front of a school bus. Typically, school bus crossing arms are wire or plastic devices which extend from the front bumper on the right side of the bus when the door is open for loading/unloading and form a barrier.

The devices force children, who need to cross the road, to stand several feet in front of the bus itself before they can begin to cross the road. This ensures that the bus driver can see them as they cross, avoiding a common blind spot immediately in front of the bus, closest to the bumper.

The crossing arm retracts flush against the bumper while not activated, such as when the bus is in motion.

A New Approach to Reducing School Bus Stop Arm Violations - School Transportation News

If you have to cross the street in front of the bus, walk on the sidewalk or along the side of the road to a point at least five giant steps (10 feet) ahead of the bus before you cross. Be sure that the bus driver can see you, and you can see the bus driver.

Never walk behind the bus.

Walk at least three giant steps away from the side of the bus.
