Another credit card system compromised - PF Changs

I just received this email:

To our valued guests,

On Tuesday, June 10, P.F. Chang's learned of a security compromise that involves credit and debit card data reportedly stolen from some of our restaurants. Immediately, we initiated an investigation with the United States Secret Service and a team of third-party forensics experts to understand the nature and scope of the incident, and while the investigation is still ongoing, we have concluded that data has been compromised.

At P.F. Chang's, the safety and security of our guests' payment information is a top priority. Therefore, we have moved to a manual credit card imprinting system for all P.F. Chang's China Bistro branded restaurants located in the continental United States. This ensures our guests can still use their credit and debit cards safely in our restaurants as our investigation continues.

We have also established a dedicated public website, pfchangs.com/security, for guests to receive updates and answers to their questions.

Because we are still in the preliminary stages of our investigation, we encourage our guests to be vigilant about checking their credit card and bank statements. Any suspected fraudulent activity should be immediately reported to their card company.

Tansy,

It is less the CC companies that the businesses that will need to update their equipment. If I understood the article I recently read (last few days) they are leaning toward a combination of the new cards and a pin.

I take no comfort in PF Chang manually processing cards. The impressed information passes through many hands before it even gets to the CC processing center.

Interesting, Marp. What I had read a while back was that the CC companies didn't want to invest in the new technology. Having just gone through someone going on a major shopping trip with a counterfeited card of mine (we had not lost or had our card stolen), I'd like to see security tightened up.

Sure but I like the cash awards I receive for using the cards.

I only use one credit card online and in stores. I make sure it has only $1000 allowed to spend.

We pay cash as much as possible. Only use a CC for online and only if we absolutely have to purchase something not available locally.

What a shame. Seems like nothing is safe anymore.

I use a credit card quite a bit. I like the benefits of record-keeping, cashback rewards, that kind of thing. When I use them online, I never leave the card on file -- I use it for a purchase and then delete it. But I don't like what apparently is a quickly increasing number of security flaws.

It's more important than ever to set alerts and keep a watchful eye on the online account.
