What is happening? The USS John S McCain collided with a merchant vessel.
The U.S. Navy said the guided-missile destroyer USS John S. McCain collided with a merchant vessel in waters east of Singapore and the Strait of Malacca early Monday.
Initial reports indicated that the destroyer sustained damage to her port side aft.
The Navy did not provide any information on injuries, but said search and rescue efforts were underway.
The collision was reported at 6:24 a.m. Japan Standard Time, while the ship was transiting to a routine port visit in Singapore, the Navy said in a statement.
The ship's commander, Alfredo J. Sanchez, is a native of San Juan, Puerto Rico.
Commissioned in 1994, the ship was built at Bath Iron Works in Maine. Its home port is Yokosuka, Japan.
I just read this on MSN homepage.

I think the Navy is neglecting to teach its captains how to drive those ships. With all the radar and electronic gadgets they have, it's hard to understand how this could happen. Once a captain's ship collides with something, his career is pretty much finished.

@Kachina624So many strange things happening..Military helicopters falling out of the sky and our naval ships having multiple collisions. Could it be that
a) we have been infiltrated by the enemy
b) our armed forces are no longer the brightest and best in the world
How terribly embarrassing for the US.
How could this be happening???

Just told dh about this (retired surface navy sailor). He is familiar with this area but it has been many many years since he sailed there.
Another ship captain, and upper staff careers are toast. It is the CO responsibility to keep the ship a crew safe and if anything happens to the ship or its crew the ultimate responsibility falls on the CO shoulders no one else's.
With all the duty standards 24/7 watches that are on military ships there is some serious flaws that are happening somewhere along the line.

as of right now, it is being reported that there are 10 sailors missing and 5 injured. prayers for those on the ship and prayers for those anxiously waiting at home for information. prayers also for those that were on the tanker and their families.

Oh goodness this is just terrible news, I am so sorry to hear this. Those poor sailors that are missing or injured, good thoughts and prayers for them and their familes. ![]()

Adding my prayers for the missing and their loved ones-- hoping maximum effort is exerted in search and rescue of these brave, brave people...

Are we assuming it is the US ship's fault or has that been verified?
