Well I spoke too soon, my mother just got a call that her called ID identified was her!

@Jordan2.  I get those. They have my name and my number.

@proudlyfromNJ, she has gotten 5 calls today with her name. This is crazy, she has never gotten so many calls from unidentified people, her name, and the number that starts with v. I'm going to call Spectrum again as the calls keep getting through.

Those "V" numbers are virtual phone numbers.

My understanding is that the caller uses it to route the call back to their own phone so that long distance charges are not incurred.  So if a person answers the caller doesn't get charged long distance.

Those numbers can be blocked.  You can call your provider and they will help you with this issue.

In the last few days we’ve been getting spam calls from area code 704 (Charlotte, NC).  I notice that spammers keep up with current events, using area codes/names associated with whatever is going on.  In this case, the hurricane headed for NC.  Many people probably have family or friends living in the area.  I've blocked that area code.

Scamming is out of control.  I wish it could be stopped or traced.  The scammers seem to target older people.  My neighbor was called and was told her grandson was in the islands and needed medical attention.  They needed $3000 .  She panicked and wired the money per their instructions.  After sending the $3,000 she called her son, her grandson was at home and nothing was wrong with him.

Nomorobo is not available on all carriers.  It is not available to Centurylink customers.

I've had a lot of odd calls also. I do not answer my phones unless it is a number I know. On my cell phone, I even had a call from Turkey! That number was very odd. 90 (382) 192 95. The way it is broken up it looks like a foreign number, but if separated into the local area code + prefix & then a number, it would be a local number. BLOCKED immediately. it would look like this if it was local. 903-xxx-xxxx

I too had tons of these calls the past two days: car warranty scams, lower interest rate scams, student loan scams, and the final straw, the infamous “Grandma, I am in jail” scam. I asked this jerk what his name was and he cries out in mock horror, “Grandma, you don’t know your own grandson’s name?” I said, “Sure I know it, it’s ******hole.” He hung up and I felt better.

Of course they all ignore the don’t call list—they are crooks!

eta: I was working with folks via phone on a work project as well as my doctor and mail order pharmacy, so I needed to answer my phone. It has been an annoying two days. My block caller feature has had a workout!

My dad is 87 and he's been receiving a lot of these kinds of calls too.  I had to counsel him on not giving out personal information. He's been on the do not call registry for a looong time but it doesn't stop scammers.
