Today I had the opportunity to visit the Northeast Animal Shelter in Salem, MA. It is a no kill shelter with lots of volunteers who love the animals. They actually import strays or unwanted dogs from the south and I believe Puerto Rico -- people around here usually neuter their pets so there are not that many unwanted dogs. Kitties on the other hand are apparently often abandoned -- they said they sometimes find boxes with little kittens on the step when they come to work. My very elderly neighbor had a senior kitty who apparently lost his home when the family got a dog who did not get along with kitty and you know who had to leave ---horrible -- the kitty did get a new good home.

apparently at the shelter they eventually place most or all of the animals -- the puppies and kittens almost immediately and longer times for the more senior ones.

We saw several very sweet dogs and the cutest little grey kitten -- everyone wanted to stuff the kitty in their bag. Since we were on a bus from our senior living complex, no one was allowed to bring any one home but who knows if someone went back. I would have been tempted if I didnt already have an elderly dog and 2 kitties. Oh well someday.

In the afternoon, we had a lecture on search and rescue dogs with a gorgeous Golden retriever -- looked like a show dog -- beautifully groomed -- retired from search and rescue and now used as a therapy dog. He greeted all of us and let up love him.

Love all the doggies and kitties -- some are much nicer than humans
