I am extremely distressed and need some opinions on this.
My family is vacationing at the beach, our 13 yr old step grand-daughter has invited a friend along.
During dinner on July 3, we asked the girls which country we gained our independence from; neither girl had any idea what we were talking about. They both had such blank looks on their faces, it was obvious this was completely unknown. They didn't even say something like, "oh, yeah, I know the answer, just can't remember". They were totally clueless. We then asked why we celebrate the 4th of July, again, no clue.
Our dil said they don't teach that in school. I said, well, if I buy a book explaining that part of our history, would she(the 13 year old) read it? The answer - NO!
Are our schools really not teaching American history? I'm planning to contact the schools in our area regarding this as soon as we return from vacation. I think by the 7th grade, this is something that should have been taught.
What do you think?
