I recently got a renewal notice from Angie's List and to keep my current membership would cost me $62.50 a year.
I checked their website and there are three levels of membership. Only the lowest one (Green) - with the least features - is free. Silver costs $24.99 and Gold $99.99 a year.
I am a Gold member and this $62.50 renewal is only for two years. After that it would increase to $99.99 or whatever a Gold membership costs then.
I don't like these changes.

Ahhh haaah! That's the catch! I should have known. Thanks @ Montana.

Thx.
I have never used it because there was a fee to join. Never understood the fee and could not find out where that money went. Glad it is free now, however there should never have been a fee.
@sunshine 919. That's odd. If you're a Costco member you pay a yearly membership fee. Who do you think gets that fee? You'd be right if you guess it would be the company! Angie's List was paid Membership based like your gym or anything else where membership fees are collected.
Thanks anyway?
Does Angie's list pay employees? People pay to join costco because there are items you can only get there, plus they pay their employees well. You pay for a gym to use their equipment. I gues I am not understanding who receives the money people pay for Angies list. I even googled it one time and I could not find out where the money went.

Sounds awful. The Heroin problem where I live plays a big part in my inability to get qualified and trustworthy contractors.
Trying to find someone is horrible. We just went through it. We worked with a locally owned business for designing and buying tiles for our shower. They gave me a list of contractors. They all charged 3 to 4 times the amount we were told they would charge by the designer, many of them were over an hour away so they had no interest in coming to our home for such a "small" job and they were all very lax in returning calls, etc. It was a nightmare. I called a number of local companies and they either didn't return calls or made appointments to come give us an estimate and never showed up.
@Lipstickdiva, it is. A company that would change prices so many times would get kicked out of my home. It's hard where I live. Some that are listed have no actual working numbers, they don't have a website.
I want to get my driveway done in concrete and had about 4 of them come out and give me estimates. All in my immediate area because hauling concrete from further distances would cost me more. None of them were going to do it to code. Not one. On top of them not wanting to do it up to code, they wanted you to pay prices like they would be. Why in the world would I let you just pour concrete without the proper prep and support?
I told them to get lost and haven't had my driveway done yet.
We just had concrete poured at a very large building we built. DH did all the leg work on that and picked the company that was going to do the most, as far as the prep work, etc. and was charging a reasonable price. (which to me was still crazy expensive for a bunch of concrete. LOL) They were very knowledgable to talk to and seemed to really have their act together. Fast forward to the day they were doing it and the concrete showed up at 2:00 in the afternoon on a super hot, humid day. It was hardening so quickly, they were having difficulty working with it. As a result, the edges around the building aren't done properly. They aren't weak but they are smoothed and finished either. They should have started that job at 7:00 a.m. not 2:00 p.m.!

@sunshine 919, I would think Angie's List has staff. How is she running this website w/o staff? Someone has to make sure the website runs smoothly. Someone has to do accounting (I'm positive) and so much more. I'm sure "Angie" has an Assistant.....

It's ideal to do concrete work where I live in late Summer (September and October).
Your case sounds like the mixture could have been wrong. Maybe the wrong aggregate or PSI. The higher the PSI, the harder the job is. That was also another problem for me getting someone to do it. I wanted at least a slight bump up in PSI and many said they wouldn't do it.

Im shaking my head. Is she running a company or not. There are coupon ladies that will gather coupons and you can get them without paying. So I am now scratching my head as well. Anyway it is now free for a reason.

Yes it's a company! What part don't you understand? It's a publicly traded company! It sells stocks. Doesn't that make it a company @sunshine 919? I don't care if you don't use the service (I don't either), I just didn't understand your comment. It didn't make any sense to me.

This company wouldn't exist without consumers writing the reviews on contractors. If you're going to write reviews for Angie's list, you should not have to pay a membership fee. I know I was asked to write reviews many times but I didn't. I didn't see a huge number of reviews for the contractors I looked up.

@Snoopp, Obviously it's her (Angie's) business model and millions of people don't agree with your take on it. If they did, they would not have paid the yearly membership fees to read the reviews. I'm not a member but was considering it.
I'm not absolutely sure, but I think there's more to that website than reading reviews. Services are offered there. You can actually purchase "services" through this website, much like you purchase "items" at QVC. In addition, there are supposedly some discounts and other "special offers" to be had as a member.
It is a little more involved than a Yelp Review or a Google review. Who are we, to tell people what kind of business they should open?
