@Vivian wrote:Apparently, CDC and NIH doctors wanted to issue a statement telling those at risk, particularly senior citizens, not only to avoid cruises but also to avoid flying. The latter was vetoed by certain government officials. That tells me something I already knew. We are not getting a complete story. One reason for that is we need more tests and we need to gather information more coherently...and disseminate it clearly to the public.
My point here is that right now we have to make decisions on travel, as well as other things, based on the information we currently have, the messenger who provides that information, and the personal risks that we assess. Those congressmen who self- quarantined after contact with someone who has the virus want to protect others. On the other hand, one congressman who was with the man who's sick decided he will continue going to work. Something similar happened in Iran and several members of their parliament are now ill and one or two died.
I think the fact that we are getting somewhat varying statements out of different agencies and government officials is only mirroring what we get in the health care field on any given subject, any given day.
There are medical providers, well educated and trained, that have different views and opinions on any given diagnosis or protocol every day. We go and get second and third opinions and then have to try to make some kind of decision of where we go with health care among all the differing opinions, and I guess this is going to be no different.

I told him I was planning on a cruise this weekend but needed his advice on this trip. He told me that he thought it would be fine for me to go but use the necessary precautions that would be used during the flu season. He gave me some signs to watch for and to call if I needed anything from him. DH and I plan on going unless the cruise line cancels. We don't want to live our lives in fear but realize we have to be responsible for our own health.
@Hoovermom I'm just curious and if you don't mind me asking are over the age of 60? Only reason I ask is because I just saw on the news from the CDC stating that anyone over the age of 60 should NOT go to any large gatherings or be in confined spaces (cruises, airplanes for an extended period, etc)
They were stating that it was NOT advised unless it was absolutely necessary. I'm sorry, but a CRUISE isn't absolutely necessary imo. I've never been on one, but I have no desire to either even if I could afford it. Anyways, please make the right decision for you and your DH. I'm sorry, but I would NOT listen to my dr in this situation. Period. He might not be aware of the current advisory.
@BrandiDavis : Thank you for your concern. My doctor is very prominent in his field and mentioned all of the precautions. I am listening to him because he saved my life years ago. We talked about it today and how far I have come. He knows Dr. Fauci and we discussed his recommendations. Again, I am trusting my doctor. I believe you left off part of the CDC's suggestion was for people over 60 WHO HAD CHRONIC health issues should ....................................
I heard reports today that they are now saying all people over 60, regardlesss of the chronic health issues, or not.

Read what it is like being in an Italian hospital of good report. I read about people they can't save, totally overwhelmed, health care workers getting sick, 200% capacity overflowing. Go on your cruise, it won't happen to you like they didn't think it would come to them. The writer was warning us and still we pay little heed.

@Free2be, listen to what people who have been stuck on these ships are saying. Half rotten food being given to them because that's what is left. Meals delivered 3 times a day and that's it. Confined to your room all the time.
I think some people have an idea in their head that it's going to be another 2 week vacation. There aren't going to be pools open, entertainment, shows, etc. DH and I booked an inside cabin. I can't imagine being confined in an inside cabin. One of us wouldn't come out alive and Covid-19 would have nothing to do with that.

On Twitter, the hashtag #CoronaDivorce is becoming popular.
With people having to work from home, couples are beginning
to see the 'other side' of their lovely spouse/partner!😄
"He types so LOUD!"
It's just a way to lighten the severity of the situation.
No more; no less.

@LipstickdivaI could not stand a two week quarantine on a cruise ship.

Speaking from experience, I know that many ships do not have a large medical staff onboard. If a large number of people get sick at the same time they would probably do nothing but say “stay in your cabin” like they have done thus far. The chances of that seem to be rather high right now...so I am amazed anyone would even have any desire to get on a ship. There is really no way to treat a virus...you just treat the symptoms...and on a ship, they just try to separate sick from healthy to try and stop the spread. Taking a cruise right now would not be enjoyable for me.

Unless the government puts a mandatory restriction on who can travel and/or cruise (which is entirely possible, by the way), @Hoovermom is free to make her own choices about her life. I hope that you and DH have a wonderful time and stay safe and healthy!

absolutely correct. Only 3 medical doctors on ship.
I will never forget the cruise I went on (15 days) had norovirus....the smell from the disenfectants sprayed in all areas was the worse. And the smell of "sickness" lingered...ugh
It was definitely an experience & worse as the cruise line did not know until we were 2 days at sea.
At least today, we are informed of this virus, it's implications and can make the decision if we want to cruise.
adding: at no time were we fed "rotten" food or confined to our room. The staff was excellent, pools & bars open, we were not allowed to serve ourselves at buffet and only those who were infected were quarantined to my knowledge.
I wonder how "factual" the info from social media is & those who want can always find the worse in any situation.

@Linmo : Thank you so much for those kind words. It is surprising to me the people who said:
"If the virus deniers and hoaxers all want to cruise together, that's fine by me. At least they'll be isolated and if they get ill, they will be more easy to treat and quarantine. If they weren't cruising, they could be running around thoughtlessly infecting healthy people."
Other people talk about the cruise ships as "floating petri dishes". They have no idea of how clean those ships are. They are constantly wiping down staircases, elevators, rooms, floors, bathrooms, you name it. Maybe they haven't taken the right kind of ship. Again, thanks for the well wishes. We shall see if there are mandatory restrictions imposed. We will obey the law.
