@occasionalrain ,  your interesting post got me speculating.  We don't have one on retainer, I doubt we could ever afford it.  But I'd sort of love to be the kind of person who DID have one on retainer, to be consulted at the drop of a hat, on any number of things.  How glam!  As well as practical.

Some of Perry Mason's clients had him on retainer in some of the episodes, and they had their fingers in all sorts of pies...

Even more, I'd love to have a doctor "on retainer" --  one who would come to your house, be obsessed with keeping his/her patients as healthy and alive as long as possible, who knew their histories inside out, etc. etc.

Sort of a 'concierge' service,  way out of my realm, but fun to imagine.

@Oznell  when I read the Title of @occasionalrain  Thread I thought of Perry Mason. Never miss it. I would love to have him as my lawyer, he would certainly get me off.

@ALRATIBA

Just curious!

Would you feel comfortable asking one of them what they think about having an attorney on retainer?

[I don't know if I'm supposed to ask for that?]

@LTT1

If you mean my parents, they're no longer living. If you meant the law firm, that's a good suggestion.

@occasionalrain

Buy a private property sign and post it in your front and back yard; if anyone breaks into your home and you shoot them, they are clearly trespassing.  That defense holds up in WV.  Our property is clearly posted.

You should really ask a local attorney.  They are both corporate lawyers.

Oh, definitely, @Sage04 ,  can you imagine having the weight of that legal mind in your corner???    The way Perry's character was written, and of course, the way Raymond Burr embodied and played him ( impeccably ),  he'd be just the dream advocate!

No other actor could have played him half as well.

I just finished watching 2 episodes. Those writers were the best and no one could have done a better job than Raymond Burr. Della loved that man so much.
But if Perry Mason isn't available I'll take Ben Matlock. Watching him right now lol

I can't imagine having an attorney on retainer. If you need an attorney, get one. If not, why pay for something you don't need?

One might need an attorney on retainer if I was a mobster, accused of serious crimes, accused of multiple crimes, etc.

@CalminHeart

Or if one of your children was a drug addict .... or engaged regularly in other illegal activities.

No, I wouldn't not.

One of my kids was an addict, arrested, jailed, probation, etc etc. He was over 18. I would not hire an attorney for him. He can use a public defender. He has to learn somehow.

After flunking out of his first year of college because of drugs, I stopped paying for college etc. He went into serious treatment. He went on to graduate magna ****** laude with 2 degrees and then earned his MSW. He's working on his PhD. He's a therapist and spent his first 12 years working with addicts. He's now the addiction expert at his firm.

Enabling is easy. Tough love is harder on the parent than the child.

We do.

Living in Florida and having homes in Maryland that we rent out means we've needed to hire an attorney quire a few times. You don't want to have to seek and find one because you don't know if they're any good, to be honest. We took our time, spoke to a family member who is a lawyer, spoke with people we knew had to hire a lawyer and in the end, found one that has proved to be worth his weight in gold. We also have trusts that are in place and a family member who will rely on us for care/financial needs till the end and again, a lawyer is necessary. We found that by keeping one on retainer, we can call at any time and ask for assistance, have something done, get information, etc and whatever needs to be done, IS done quite quickly.

Peace of mind is worth it for us.
