Amazon To Start Charging Some Customers To Return Via UPS

Amazon announced it will start charging some customers for return items they take to UPS stores.

Before now, the returns were free, but Amazon is taking new steps to reduce the number of items customers return because “handling returns has become an expensive problem for the company,” CNN reported.

How much will Amazon charge for UPS returns?

Moving forward, Amazon will charge a $1 fee for items returned “to a UPS store when there is a Whole Foods, Amazon Fresh grocery store or Kohl’s closer to their delivery address,” per CNN.

According to The Information, which first reported the Amazon news, “Returns have been an expensive headache for e-commerce companies after they skyrocketed during pandemic lockdown and have remained stubbornly high.”

Can Amazon customers still get free returns at Kohl’s, Whole Foods?

Before now, Amazon did charge customers for UPS to pick up returns from their house, but customers can still go to Whole Foods, Amazon Fresh grocery store or Kohl’s, which Amazon has a partnership with, to return items for free, per Business Insider.

“We always offer a free option for customers to return their item,” Amazon spokesperson Steve Kelly told Insider by email. “If a customer would prefer to return their item at a UPS Store when there is a free option closer to their delivery address, a very small amount of customers may incur a $1 fee.”

i have a KOHLS close by, so i will be doing my returns there if they begin charging for shipments out of the UPS store.

For me the UPS store is a bit further away then Kohl's but it is easier.  Unless I'm already going to Kohl's I continue taking the few things we return to the UPS store.

I have all three locations fairly close by....but UPS is the closest and Kohl's the furthest...which I never go to...so at least I'll have two to pick from...

UPS is closest for me...but I would pay $1 to not have to go to Kohls or Whole Foods to return. I return very little to Amazon...mainly an occasional shoe/boot that doesn't fit or is uncomfortable.

Good to know as I hadn't heard this yet.  Like others, the UPS store is further away from me in terms of miles but easier to get to in terms of time than the other options.  At least $1 isn't unreasonable for the convenience.

I wonder if they're going to charge the fee if the item is defective or the wrong item was sent?

Everyone......

If UPS is closer, you will NOT be charged.  Returns will remain FREE.

We're usually pretty good with A so we don't return a lot to them but the only option nearby is UPS and they make it so easy. The owner of the location said that they saved his business, and since we don't have a Whole Foods or Kohls anywere near us we are thankful to have this option.
