Also for the way an item has been priced on Amazon for the past few months go to camelcamelcamel dot com and type in the item to see if pricing has remained consistent.

Forgot to mention, two Prime things I have just"found."
1) Another person can share the prime membership (I added DH so a free book could be sent to his reader)
2) BRB
That's a nice thing. But the problem has been, and one of the reasons for the price increase, that there are a lot of people who circumvent the rules (i.e. cheat). It only applies to people in the household and I guess there has been a big problem with people sharing their prime with people outside the household.
The cheaters don't care, of course, but their cheating causes everybody else to pay more.

I agree with most everyone here. Sometimes it's higher, but I would say mostly it is not.
Today from Amazon I ordered hiking poles and car front window sun shades. To shop locally I would have had to go to a sporting goods store, then to an auto supply store. It would probably have taken 1.5 hours plus gas. Traffic in my area is awful almost all the time. I'm happy to have the stuff delivered.
This morning on NPR I heard that Amazon is launching lines of womens, mens and children's clothing, not under the name "Amazon," but other names.

@chickenbutt... Oh dear... I hate that!
Yeah, I know - it's a drag. I guess there will always be cheaters.
They are usually people who feel they are owed for some nonsensical reason. In the process they make everybody else pay more for products/services.

I buy a great deal from Amazon, and I do enjoy Prime. What I have found is Amazon prices go up and down, like the stock market.! No kidding!! true story! One item was a case of 24, 8ounce cans of monster drinks. I bought it for 16 dollars and change, free shipping over a week ago. This week it is 64.99!! I am serious. That is a mark up of of over 47.00! This happens with many items. I can't figure it out.
The convenience is wonderful, and their customer service is great! They go out of their way at times. I love the feature of clicking customer service, then the call me option. Geesh, the phone rings in 2 seconds, and there is CS ready to help!

Anyone?
I do have a theory but only that, a theory. I think when a seller/provider jacks up the price like that it is because they cannot provide the product at that time and uses the outrageous increase as a placeholder anticipating that no one will order at that price.
They then keep their place and won't get a ratings ding because they can't meet shipment requirements. Once things normalize the price goes back to fair market and they just carry on.

Yep, this is true. Light fixtures I have in my saved items go up and down in price from $200 up to almost $1000! For items I want but don't need right away, I will keep stuff in my cart and wait until it goes down and purchase at the lowest price. I do this all the time. It is like a game.

I think so. No way would anyone (I think) pay the price they ask sometimes. I hadn't thought of the possibility that it was keeping their place in line to sell. Makes sense.
