Re: Amazon Forums Going Bye-Bye

I just order stuff from Amazon and watch some of their film offerings as a Prime Member.

I guess I saw that they have forums but I never bothered to check them out.  I spend too much time on the computer as it is.

Re: Amazon Forums Going Bye-Bye

I do anything and everything not to shop at Amazon.

Never knew they had a forum.

The very few things that I have purchased are items that are not anywhere else.  They treat their workers poorly.

Forums like Q bring myself to this site at least 10x's a day to see what every is talking about and than I look at what's on sale. If the forums stop there will not be any reason to check this site daily.

I wouldn’t have known they were there, but when I bought my first Kindle in maybe 2008, being the investigative type, I searched around the site for more “Kindle stuff/info” and stumbled across the Kindle forum, which has been very much like a combo of CC and Among Friends. Discussion was never limited to books or Kindles. Their forums have been much like ours, except less moderated and somewhat wilder & woolier.

Re: Amazon Forums Going Bye-Bye

Amazon used to make it easy to find their forums as there would be links on the suitable product pages. They also had a forum home page that listed every forum they had. They had forums for everything under the sun including general discussion forums. Then a few years back they removed the links to the forums and you had to know where they were to find them. Then they changed the addresses so the old links didn't work, but the forums were still there, you had to Google them to find them. I only hung out on a few of the forums and was only a regular on the ABNA one. With each step to make it harder to find the forums they lost more and more readers. (Just as readership here is down from the past thanks to the many changes in recent years.) They pretty much weaned everyone away and now they're shutting them down.

I think there's just too much competition and many.most people are more social media oriented these days than forum oriented. Our online communities are evolving and changing by the day and forums seem to be being phased out in favor of newer forms of interaction.

Leave it be, is jmoymmv.

I knew but can never find the forums...I have accidentally come upon them and then when I go looking again...no idea how to find them.

@Moonchilde

I wonder if these updates are part of the issue with Amazon..I'm wondering if this is going to impact QVC in anyway............

Java 9 is about to be released in a few months, and it may cause  compatibility issues with The Edge and IE Explorer browsers.

Adobe released some information this week that stated browsers will no longer support Flash by 2020. While we realize this may seem like light years away, it’s never too early to be prepared. You can read the article in full by clicking here.

https://venturebeat.com/2017/07/25/adobe-taps-apple-google-facebook-microsoft-and-mozilla-to-kill-fl...

  • Microsoft – (As stated in the article)
    • Through the end of 2017 and into 2018 — Edge will continue to ask users for permission to run Flash on most sites the first time the site is visited, remembering the user’s preference on subsequent visits. IE will continue to allow Flash without prompting for permission.
    • Mid to late 2018 — Edge will require permission for Flash to be run each session. IE will continue to allow Flash for all sites.
    • Mid to late 2019 — Flash will be disabled by default in both Edge and IE. Users will be able to re-enable Flash in both browsers.
    • End of 2020 — Flash in Edge and IE will be removed across all supported versions of Windows. Users will no longer have any ability to enable or run Flash.
  • Google Chrome – At this time, Google hasn’t made any announcements to stop allowing Flash earlier than Adobe’s planned kill date of 2020.
  • Mozilla – You can see their detailed listing of Flash plans by clicking here.
    • September 2017
      • Starting with Firefox 56 in September 2017, Firefox for Android will remove all support for plugins.
    • Late 2018
    • In the second half of 2018, Firefox will no longer remember the Flash setting and users will have to choose each session whether to activate Flash.
    • Early 2019
    • In early 2019, Firefox will show a user-visible warning on sites that continue to use Flash.
    • 2019
    • A few months after the user-visible warning, Firefox will disable the Flash plugin by default. Users will not be prompted to enable Flash, but it will still be possible to activate Flash on certain sites using browser settings.
    • 2020
    • In early 2020, Flash support will be completely removed from consumer versions of Firefox. The Firefox Extended Support Release (ESR) will continue to support for Flash until the end of 2020.
    • 2021
    • When Adobe stops shipping security updates for Flash at the end of 2020, Firefox

Re: Amazon Forums Going Bye-Bye

I would doubt it, @Spurt. There’s nothing on their forums (as opposed to their website as a whole) that requires or uses Flash. And Amazon being Amazon, with all the money in the world to throw at their website and a huuuge IT budget, I think if Amazon wanted to have forums, they would.

JMO, but like other sites that have until the last few years had active (and out of control) Comments sections and Discussion areas, I think Amazon got tired of worrying about their forums as far as hearing complaints, being liable for what was on them in various ways, not wanting to spend manpower on moderating them because they didn’t feel that maintaining them brought them (Amazon) enough benefits to outweigh the PIT* aspect for them. That’s just my guess based on being on the forums for long while, hearing and seeing things. They have been trying to downplay and bail on their forums for probably close to two years, doing what they could to encourage people to stop using them.

There was moderation, but it was much less than on QVC’s forums so there certainly were forums (Politics, Religion, the self-published author forum) where things got very nasty - far, far worse than this forum has ever been.

There were also extremely serious issues of some self-pubbed authors stalking posters and trying to frighten them, threatening them, and even trying to get them fired. The only thing Amazon appears to have done about that was to segregate the self-published authors into their own forum. It also tended to side with the authors, and Goodreads (which Amazon owns) even changed because of it. Many people felt they couldn’t leave an honest review either on Amazon or on Goodreads for fear of being chastised bt Amazon or banned.

So...lot of hassle all-round for Amazon.

@Moonchilde

Yep, probably they viewed their Forums as a headache rather than something to keep customers coming to their site....And they could move the IT folks to more important task............

This was long ago but gee even leaving a bad book review on their website would result in harrassment if it was someone's favorite author....and any replies were conneted directly to your email (although the other person couldnt see the actual address), One time there was a group that didnt like my review, and I had to block these people from their harrassessing comments in my email---gee let me read what I like, and you can read what you like!!!

But its funny how some Forums can be quite fun and everyone gets along real well---that's how one guy runs his football forum (and he's very strict)...others are so out of control and too wild and wooly for me.........

But since websites use flash and java to run stuff on websites (videos the Apps etc) ....I wonder if QVC is going to be impacted........
