Keep in mind that these photos are heavily photoshopped. The photos are pasted together from many different photos taken by Hubble in black and white. The various depths and gases that are shown are each assigned a different color to show the variations. Here is an article that contains a video, supplied by NASA, showing how they create the final images they release.
